Lawmakers Ask CBN, Banks To Overhaul Online Platforms

The House of Representatives has asked the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to direct all Commercial Banks in the country to urgently overhaul their existing online/electronic banking platforms for efficiency and ease of conducting electronic banking operations.

The House passed the resolution in Abuja on Thursday at its plenary presided over by the Speaker of the House, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila.

The resolution was passed sequel to a motion moved by a member from Edo state, Hon. Sergius Ose-Ogun.

He stated that there has been an increase in the use of online and electronic banking services to carry out monetary transactions across the country in the wake of the recent naira redesign and cash withdrawal limit policy of the Central Bank of Nigeria.

The lawmaker however, noted that the use of online or internet banking services by Nigerians in the past three months or there about has been characterized by varying degrees of hitches ranging from unsuccessful electronic bank transfers, point of sale (POS) service failure and a host of others.

Untold hardship

According to him, the ineffectiveness or difficulty in using internet banking services across the online banking platforms of most Commercial Banks in Nigeria has brought untold hardship, suffering and difficulties on Nigerians in the past three months.

Ogun expressed concern stating that if nothing is done by the Central Bank of Nigeria and the Commercial Banks to address these difficulties, Nigerians will continue to suffer untold hardships
and loss of monies to unsuccessful electronic bank transactions.

While adopting the motion, the house mandated the committee on banking and Currency to ensure compliance and report back to the house within four weeks for further legislative action.

Nassarawa State Government Holds Pre-retirement Skills Training For Civil Servant

The Civil Servants in Nasarawa State who had served for 35 years or turned 60 years as required by the law have lauded the state government for organising a pre-retirement skills and entrepreneurship training to empower them for a life after service.

The civil servants stated this on Thursday at the closing ceremony of a two-week skills and entrepreneurship training for over 69 civil servants about to retire from service.

They were trained on Livestock Production, Auto Mechanic, Electrical Installation, Leather Works, Information Communication Technology (ICT), Cosmetology, Tailoring and Fashion Design and Baking, Pastries and Confectionary at the Wing Commander Abdullahi Ibrahim Vocational and Technology Institute Lafia.

Mr. Abubakar Umar, lauded the state Governor Abdullahi Sule for the initiative, which was first of its kind to expose retiring civil servants to different skills that would make thier lives meaningful after retirement.

Mr. Umar added that they have acquired skills in different areas of their choice and the experience and knowledge gained was indeed huge within just two weeks.

“We were taken through the practical rudiments of our choice areas by the facilitators during the two weeks intensive training.

“We cannot thank the governor enough as being the first set ever in the history of the state to be trained ahead of our retirement so that we will still be productive in the next phase of life,” he noted

Also, Mr. Sunday Magaji who learned leather works, said he never knew he could learn and do a lot within just two weeks.

He explained that everyone of them had produced one product or the other and urged the public to patronize them as their sandals and bags are of  highly quality.

Startup pack

He however, appealed to the state government to provide them with a startup pack to enable them set up their shops for businesses immediately after retirement from active service.

Also, Mrs. Juliana Kuju, another participant commended the government for the opportunity to learn skills but appealed that the exercise should be extended to three months for subsequent beneficiaries.

Mrs. Kuju also used the medium and appealed to the state government to give the beneficiaries of the training their entitlements immediately after retirement to enable them use it to set up their businesses.

Meanwhile, the Executive Director of the Training Institute, Dr. Daniel Ewuga, commended the government for establishing the place and funding it for optimal performance.

Ewuga, explained that the initiative was aimed at providing employable and entrepreneurship skills to civil servants who have few months to retire from active government service.

According to him, “It would go a long way to address the challenges that are associated with the retirement phase of life, reduce poverty and create wealth,”.

Mr. Ewuga,, therefore encouraged the beneficiaries to set up their shops to prove to the world that the two weeks of training were not a waste.

Also, Nasarawa State, Acting Head of Civil Service, Abigail Waya, congratulated the beneficiaries for humbling themselves despite their ranks as senior government officials to learn one skill or the other.

Abigail Waya, added that she was amazed at the products that were made by the trainees within two weeks and encouraged them to set up businesses after retirement.

“You could start a business of your choice in your parlor or anywhere in your house if you do not have money to rent a shop.

“If you start your own business or trade, it would take away the fear of retirement, keep them healthy and make them unavailable for the devil to use because they will not be idle,” she added.

Abigail Waya therefore, assured them that the government would still supervise, guide and support them when they set up their businesses to enable them to succeed.

UK: Ekweremadu, Wife found Guilty Of Organ Trafficking

Nigeria’s former deputy Senate president, Ike Ekweremadu has been found guilty of organ trafficking by a United Kingdom court.

Ekweremadu, 60, his wife, Beatrice, 56, and Dr Obinna Obeta, 51, were found guilty of facilitating the travel of a young man to Britain with a view to his exploitation after a six-week trial at the Old Bailey.

They criminally conspired to bring the 21-year-old Lagos street trader to London to exploit him for his kidney, the jury found.

The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, had been offered an illegal reward to become a donor for the senator’s daughter after kidney disease forced her to drop out of a master’s degree in film at Newcastle University,” the court heard. Sonia Ekweremadu aged 25, was found not guilty.

She was cleared of the same charge.

In February 2022, the man was falsely presented to a private renal unit at Royal Free hospital in London as Sonia’s cousin in a failed attempt to persuade medics to carry out an £80,000 transplant. For a fee, a medical secretary at the hospital acted as an Igbo translator between the man and the doctors to help try to convince them he was an altruistic donor, the court heard.

The prosecutor Hugh Davies KC told the court the Ekweremadus and Obeta had treated the man and other potential donors as “disposable assets – spare parts for reward”. He said they entered an “emotionally cold commercial transaction” with the man.

The victim, a street trader from Lagos, was brought to the UK last year to provide a kidney.

He said; “I was promised opportunities in the UK for helping, and I only realised what was going on when I met doctors at the hospital.”

While it is lawful to donate a kidney, it becomes criminal if there is a reward of money or other material advantage.

When he was rejected as unsuitable, the court heard the Ekweremadus transferred their interest to Turkey and set about finding another donor.

The Ekweremadus, who have an address in Willesden Green, north-west London, and Dr Obeta, from Southwark, south London, denied the charge against them, saying he was the victim of a scam. Obeta, who also denied the charge, claimed the man was not offered a reward for his kidney and was acting altruistically. Beatrice denied any knowledge of the alleged conspiracy. Sonia did not give evidence.

India Cancels Drug Maker License Over Child Deaths In Uzbekistan

0

India has cancelled the manufacturing license of a firm whose cough syrups have been linked to 18 child deaths in Uzbekistan.

The WHO in January had warned against the use of two cough syrups made by Marion Biotech, saying they were substandard. However Marion Biotech denied the allegation.

After the deaths were reported in Uzbekistan, India’s health ministry suspended production at the company.

Authorities in Uttar Pradesh state where Marion Biotech is based said they were now “permanently” canceling the company’s license.

“The firm based in Noida city cannot carry out any manufacturing now,” drug inspector Vaibhav Babbar told the Hindustan Times newspaper.

Marion Biotech has not responded to any requests for comment.

India is the world’s largest exporter of generic drugs, meeting much of the medical needs of developing countries.

But in recent months, many Indian firms have come under scrutiny for the quality of their drugs, with experts raising concerns about the manufacturing practices used to make these medicines.

The latest action against Marion Biotech came after tests by a government laboratory in December found 22 drug samples of the firm’s cough syrup to be “adulterated and spurious”.

“The adulterated and spurious drugs can cause grievous hurt to the public and it is suspected that related material/records may be disposed of,” Asheesh Kaundal, inspector of India’s Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO), had said in his complaint.

Earlier this month, the Uttar Pradesh police had also arrested three employees of the company for selling adulterated products.

The Drugs Licensing Officer of Uttar Pradesh, SK Chaurasia,  said that Marion Biotech had failed to respond to the notice issued to them in connection with the findings “satisfactorily”.

India launched an investigation against Marion Biotech after the WHO issued a global medical alert, linking the deaths of 18 children in Uzbekistan to the firm’s Dok-1 Max and Ambronol cough syrups.

The health body said an analysis by the quality control laboratories of Uzbekistan’s health ministry had found “unacceptable amounts” of Diethylene glycol and ethylene glycol in the drugs.

The substances are toxic to humans and could be fatal if consumed.

Marion Biotech said that it “did not agree” with the WHO’s findings and that it was cooperating with investigations being carried on by the Indian government.

Marion Biotech isn’t the first Indian drug maker to get into trouble over its cough syrups.

In October, WHO  linked four cough syrups made by Maiden Pharmaceuticals to the deaths of 66 children from kidney injuries in The Gambia.

Both the Indian government and the company, Maiden Pharmaceuticals, have denied the allegations.
