Burna Boy break this silence on Sunday 26th February, on his Instagram account to call on INEC to let the will of the people prevail in the 2023 national elections.

According to his post,

“Let Nigeria decide o! @inecnigeria. No try any result magic,”

Nigerians went to the polls on Saturday, 25th February 2023 to vote for a new president and National Assembly members.

The elections which have been described as the most important since 1999 have 18 candidates vying to replace the outgoing President Muhammadu Buhari.

The three frontline candidates are the All Progressives Congress candidate Bola Ahmed Tinubu, People’s Democratic Party candidate Atiku Abubakar, and the Labour Party candidate Peter Obi.

The election has witnessed allegations of violence, voter harassment and intimidation, and rigging in multiple states.

Burna Boy criticised for staying silent: Burna Boy alongside other artists has been called out on Twitter by some users for their silence during the electoral process. Burna Boy has been in the line of fire, especially as his music often touches on the plight of Nigerians and many expected him to be vocal during the electoral process.

His last album ‘Love, Damini’ had a track titled ‘Common Person’ in which he talk about the lives of the common man in Nigeria. Most of the criticism coming his way stems from the fact that he has failed to walk the talk in the opinion of many listeners.

Burna Boy’s statement to INEC is in line with the wish of the well-meaning Nigerians who are calling on the electoral umpire to ensure that the will of the people prevails.

Tunisian groups denounce anti-migrant rhetoric

Chanting “No to racism” and holding placards hundreds of demonstrators marched through the streets of Tunis on Saturday.

They denounced hate against migrants, days after the president claimed there was a plot to erase Tunisia’s identity by bringing immigrants from sub-Saharan countries.

“After the speech of the President of the Republic, we recorded many escalations of racist attacks against refugees in sub-Saharan Africa,” the spokesman of Tunisian Forum for Economic and Social Rights revealed.

“These attacks consisted of attempts to expel migrants from their homes, ban (them from using) public transportation, and physical, racist attacks”.

The protest was organised by the union of Tunisian Journalists and several non-governmental organisations.

During a national security council meeting, president Saied said measures were needed to address the illegal entry of sub-Saharan Africans who allegedly came with “with their lot of violence, crimes and unacceptable practices.”

Actress Fatma Saidane hoped tensions would cool “The situation must calm down, and we should not attack them, because they are our brothers, just as we do not want Tunisians who are illegal immigrants in Italy or France to be subjected to any racist treatment.”

“We also do not want (migrants) in Tunisia to be treated that way. There are laws that apply without any infringement of their rights.”

Tunisia is a point of departure for migrants seeking to go to Europe.

The African Union chairperson condemned shocking comments; which Tunis rejected, arguing its position had been misunderstood.

2023 Elections: Kaduna residents commend INEC

0

Residents of Kaduna State, North West Nigeria have commended the process and conduct of the 2023 general election in the State.

They expressed gratitude to the President for the new electoral law and technological device which made the procedure seamless.

Sunday Amos who spoke to our correspondent opined that the 2023 general election is the best Nigeria has ever had as citizens were given the opportunity to choose candidates of their choice irrespective of party affiliation.

“Even if my candidate is not declared the winner, I am still happy because I voted my conscience.”

Naira Policy
He also said the new naira policy has drastically reduced vote buying, allowing electorates to vote for credibility.

Lilian John explained that, unlike in the past when candidates celebrate victory before the conduct of the election, the new electoral law has forced them to canvass for votes painstakingly.

“This election has proven to be a success, the best of its kind. It is no longer business as usual where politicians impose candidates on us. Citizens have been allowed to vote for their candidates and we are happy about that. There is nothing like top to bottom, people now vote for credible candidates on different party platforms.”

For Sadiya Abubakar, she said she was impressed with the orderly manner people displayed at the voting units.

“You see Kaduna is one of the volatile states in the North, but people are enlightened and know that violence is not the way. They displayed orderliness while casting their votes.”

Generally, Kaduna is peaceful and has concluded elections. Results are being collated at the Local Government Areas which will later be submitted to INEC later in the day for the announcement.

Calabar: PFN seeks rescheduling of Elections in some parts

0

The Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria, PFN, has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to reschedule Saturday’s election in areas where the exercise was marred by illegalities.

The chairman of PFN in Cross River State, southern Nigeria, Dr. Lawrence Ekwok urged the electoral commission to repeat the elections across polling units, wards and states where the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System, BVAS machines malfunctioned and/or witnessed delayed arrival of materials.

Ekwok, who also suggested outright cancellation of centres where thugs snatched ballot boxes, results sheets or ballot papers, stated, “we are calling on INEC for the cancellation and repeat of the election in areas where some people were not allowed to vote or where the BVAS, Ballot boxes and other election materials were carted away or destroyed by political thugs.

Other areas where elections should be cancelled and repeated includes polling units, wards or states where ballot papers did not contain the logos of some participating political parties, doing this will avoid possible protests from those, who may feel disenfranchised.”

He enjoined the people of Cross River State and Nigerians in general to turn out en masse for the March 11, 2023 governorship and state house of assembly election.

Police Attributes Peaceful Election to Enhanced Network in Cross-River

0

The Cross River Command of the Nigeria Police Force in Southern Nigeria has attributed the peaceful conduct of the presidential and national assembly elections to the strengthened security network amongst operatives.

The Command’s Public Relations Officer, Superintendent of Police Irene Ugbo, who spoke with Voice of Nigeria said: The conduct of the election across the state has been fair if not perfect because of the modalities we put in place. We made our network so strong and impregnable for hoodlums to penetrate and cause mayhem.

“They could not infiltrate, they (hoodlums) could not come in to disrupt the exercise. You will agree with me that since Friday evening through Saturday, which was the main day of the election until now, we are all enjoying the peace. We are currently at the office waiting for results to come in. Everywhere is calm and there is no problem at all,” Ugbo stated.

On the purported arrest of the House of Representative member representing Calabar South, Akpabuyo and Bakassi Federal Constituency, Mr. Essien Ayi, she stated, “that was since yesterday. We got information that some of his people were trying to be funny. So, we had to invite him and ensured he gives us a guarantee that his people would desist from disturbing the peace. After that, he was free to leave.”

Ours is to protect the lives, property and freedom of citizens, of all people. That was one of the reasons we took time to inform the public of the restrictions of vehicular movement from midnight on Friday through 6 o’ clock Saturday evening.

“The command is resolute and committed to ensuring peaceful and professional conduct as required by the rules of engagement. We also made public telephone two helplines besides reminding the people that election was not worth dying for, but an opportunity to make a choice,” she added.
