Big Brother Housemates Thanbag And Khosi Resolve Differences

Big Brother housemates Thanbag and Khosi have finally put aside their differences and united.

Recall that on Day 23 in Big Brother’s house, the housemates got into a very serious altercation that caused Biggie to issue stern warnings to them.

This issue started with Thabang’s partner, Nana, taking subtle shots at Khosi, to which Khosi reacted rather aggressively, causing Jenni O to get involved.

Day 25 seems to have started on a different note as Thabang and Khosi have seemingly buried the hatchet and decided to go on with their friendship.

Khosi began by apologising for staying away from Thabang. She acknowledged that she may have acted based on impulse and hopes they can still be friends without distractions.

Then they hugged for a long time.

Khosi asked Thabang how he felt when she gave him a cookie; he said that he was surprised to get one from her.

However, Khosi admitted that she was hurt when she did not receive a cookie back.

Biden Promises to Defend Social Programmes in Florida Speech

0

United States President Joe Biden has pitched himself as a defender of retirement and healthcare programmes during a speech in the southern state of Florida, promising to protect Medicare and Social Security against any proposed cuts by Republicans.

Speaking in the city of Tampa, Biden, a Democrat, leaned into statements he had previously made that the rival party could not be trusted to safeguard government benefits.

Look, I know that a lot of Republicans, their dream is to cut Social Security, Medicare. Well, let me say this. If that’s your dream, I’m your nightmare,” he told the audience at the University of Tampa.

Biden is widely speculated to be preparing for a reelection bid in 2024. In his remarks on Wednesday, he appealed to older Americans, noting that Florida has the highest percentage of senior citizens in the US, along with Maine.

In the US, Medicare is a federal health insurance programme for people ages 65 and up that is also available to certain younger people with disabilities. Social Security, meanwhile, provides benefits for retirement, disability and dependents whose family members pass away.

Biden also reiterated on Wednesday his previous pledge to lower the prices of “prescription drugs” like insulin, a medication used to treat diabetes. Biden has proposed limiting out-of-pocket costs for insulin to $35 a month.

Bringing down prescription drug costs doesn’t just save seniors money. It would cut the federal budget by hundreds of billions of dollars. Not a joke,” he said to applause.

Governor Affirms Relevance of Technology to Service Delivery

The Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has emphasised the need for civil/public service to embrace the use of technology for more effective and productive service delivery.

The governor said this, on Thursday, while inaugurating a 20-man Committee to review the Civil and Public Service Rules and Regulations in the state, at the Executive Council Chamber of the Governor’s Office, Secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan.

Makinde noted that the administration considered the review expedient because the Civil/Public Service Rules and Regulation Volumes I and II were last reviewed in the year 2013 and most of the rules and regulations guiding the activities of the workers were no longer effective, compared to the emerging environment.

He said: “Some of the rules have not been reviewed since then, and since that time, things have changed very much. For instance, the advancement of technology requires that things be done differently now. But people are still so much used to carrying files around.

“So, this means that if the civil and public service is to continue being efficient, changes must also be made to the rules that guide the conduct of the activities under the public and civil service,” the governor explained.

Pointing to advancements in technology, Makinde said he had always wished that electronic approval of documents replaced the usual practice of tons of files being dropped on his table for him to append his signature using ink pen.

He charged the Committee to take a holistic look at the existing rules to bring public and civil servants up to speed with the realities of today’s work environment.

Disclosing that there would be areas where the paths of the state and the federal governments would cross. The governor asked the Committee to look at the workability of having to domesticate federal government stipulations regarding the public and civil service, particularly the issue of the retirement age of teachers.

He stated: “The type of federalism we have does not have regard for the sub-nationals as they think they are more important, whereas we are supposed to have co-ordinate powers. I am a believer that the people at the federal level are not smarter than those at the state level. We demonstrated during the Covid-19 pandemic that we can come out with far better ideas compared to that of the federal level.”

The governor maintained that the Committee’s efforts would be complemented by those working in the private sector, who understand how things work, as it would collaborate with Deloitte & Touche Consulting to engender better effectiveness and efficiency in public service operations.

The Committee, headed by a former Head of Service and Secretary to the State Government in the old Oyo State, Chief Adebisi Adesola, has as members: representatives of the Association of Retired Permanent Secretaries and Heads of Service in Oyo and Osun States, representatives of Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs); representatives of labor unions and representatives of Deloitte & Touche Consulting.

President Buhari Seeks Royal Support For Tinubu

0

President Muhammadu Buhari and the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC in the forthcoming Presidential elections Bola Tinubu, on Thursday took an important message to the Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar III.

We have come here to ask for your support and blessings; we want to win the coming elections,” President Buhari told the Sultan.

Bola Tinubu, the first to speak and the first to bait the Sultan, said plainly to leader of the Sokoto Caliphate: “I have come to be presented to you as Candidate. The President and Commander-in-Chief, Muhammadu Buhari is here in person to do that. I want to win the election. Is there a way you will decline the request of the President?”

Echoing the same line, President Buhari said, “my wish is for your support and blessings; we want to win.”

He went on to narrate the qualities of the candidates, including their common belief and commitment to the unity and progress of every section of the country.

He said he had associated with Asiwaju for more than 20 years and did not have any reservations in supporting him as the candidate of the APC.

The President said Tinubu’s greatest strength was in his effective governance of Lagos, the country’s former Capital, a business hub and home to diverse individuals from all over Nigeria for two terms; his commitment to democracy; as well as his role at the center as a Senator.

He said his message to Nigerians is that they should trust Tinubu with power to succeed him because the APC candidate, supported by Kashim Shettima, the running mate would build on the successes of his administration.

Father of All

In his response, His Eminence, Sultan Abubakar III,  declared that being an apolitical father of all and custodian of culture, he would continue to receive everyone that sought the blessing of the throne, telling President Buhari that many had come before him for the same purpose while many more would still come.

“We will continue to pray for our nation. We cannot be tired of praying and will continue to advocate for peaceful and free elections in our fatherland,” the Sultan further said.

He assured President Buhari that the Caliphate was behind him as he sought to ensure free and fair elections, noting that the President’s commitment to be present at the next signing of the Peace Accord by the political parties underscored his administration’s desire to bequeath to the nation a credible electoral process.

Speaking before  an unprecedented crowd at the Giginya Memorial Stadium, Sokoto, the venue of the party’s Presidential and Gubernatorial Campaign rally, President Buhari said that as the party’s Presidential candidate who had been nominated by the party in a free, fair and democratic primary, it was incumbent on all members to work towards the success of the party in the forthcoming elections across the state and at all levels.

He remarked that Senator Tinubu and his Vice, Senator Kashim Shettima were men who understand the problems of Nigeria, having been in politics as two-time Governors in their respective states and would proffer solutions to the challenges facing Nigeria.

Also present at the rally were the President of the Senate, Ahmed Lawan, Speaker, House of Representatives, Rt. Honourable Femi Gbajabiamila, former Governor  Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, the party leader who got a great deal of attention at the rally, as well as other party stalwarts.

Nigeria joins Open Government Partnership to improve governance

The Minister of State for Budget and National Planning, Prince Clem Ikanade Agba, says  President Muhammadu Buhari committed to joining the Open Government Partnership (OGP) global family as its 70th member as part of efforts to fight corruption and improve governance in the country.

The Minister said since joining in 2016, the country had developed and implemented two action plans organised around transparency, access to information, anti-corruption, citizen engagement, service delivery, inclusion and extractive transparency.

Agba disclosed this at the official signing ceremony of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Corporate Affairs Commission CAC) and the Open Government Partnership (OGP) in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.

He said that the signing ceremony was an affirmation of CAC’s commitment to the principles of open governance in Nigeria.

Agba explained that the signing of the MoU would enable the OGP Secretariat to formally take “physical possession of the property that the Registrar-General of the Corporate Affairs Commission offered for the release of the Commission’s Zone 5 office, with a view to ensuring its judicious use”.

He noted that the spacious and conducive office would be “promotive of the onerous duties and responsibilities of the Secretariat of the OGP”.

He appreciated the CAC, especially its Registrar General for their benevolent gesture which would, “in no small measure, contribute to the entrenchment of the workings of the OGP revolution” which was kickstarted in Nigeria in 2016 when

He said Nigeria had also been accepted into the membership of the Beneficial Ownership Leadership Group because of its avowed commitment to stamp out corruption and block illicit financial flows.

He added that the country’s aspiration in joining the Leadership Group was to strengthen “our international alliances towards a more seamless coordination for tracking illicit flows from Nigeria to anywhere around the world.”

“I take this opportunity to appreciate the collaborative efforts of the Registrar General in ensuring that Nigeria sets the pace in the development of a Beneficial Ownership Register in the African sub-region,” the Minister enthused.

Agba noted that for its tenacity in fighting corruption, Nigeria at the last OGP Global Summit in Seoul, South Korea, which held from December 15 to 17, 2021, won the OGP Impact Award – “for our commitment to Beneficial Ownership.”

This Global Award was in recognition of the nation’s resolve to press forward with OGP reforms, the Minister said.

He emphasised that the nation was striving to make the OGP work in Nigeria, saying “I assure you that we will ensure that the facility will be put to good use in fostering the institutionalisation of openness, transparency, accountability and inclusiveness in the Nigerian governance process.

“With the imminent roll out of the NAP III, these achievements will be consolidated upon by facilitating the full deployment and optimisation of the Beneficial Ownership Register.”

He reiterated that the OGP as a co-creation idea found this partnership with the CAC exemplary, while challenging other stakeholders to take a cue from the CAC in co-creatively advancing the OGP cause in Nigeria.

The Registrar General of the CAC, Alhaji Abubakar Garba said the CAC felt a sense of responsibility to support the OGP initiative.

He said that OGP needed all the support so that it could do more.

NEPZA Calls on Nigerian States To Embark On Free Trade Scheme

All States in Nigeria have been asked to take part in the free trade zone scheme by applying through the Nigeria Export Processing Zones Authority NEPZA.

The chief executive officer of the authority, Mr. Adesoji Adesugba made the call during a press briefing.

He promised to give special attention to Akwaibom State in sothern Nigeria, following complaints of difficulty in obtaining the license from NEPZA,

He said, “I’m not sure we have records of Akwaibom applying for any free zone licence, and we are inviting them if they still desire to have a free zone, because it is our desire to have a free zone in each state of the country regardless of who is the political head we’re talking of the economy, we’re talking of Nigeria, poverty does not know party, the president has been magnanimous he has treated everybody equally under the economic development agenda using the free zone scheme and in this light, it is also on record that we’ve be working very closely with every state that so desires “

According to Mr. Adesugba, working on infrastructural development which would ease transactions in the free trade zones is also being focused on.

We just commissioned the port, it cost 1.2 billion US dollars, the free port, and that free port if you look at the project management that went through setting up that free space, within three four years as in up and going as a critical infrastructure for Nigeria. We have the Lekky free zone , we have the Lagos free zone,” he stated.

Mr Adesugba further explained how a free trade zone works which is any location where goods can be shipped, handled, manufactured, reconfigured and re-exported without the involvement of customs agencies.

A major sea port, an international airport, or a border facility between two or more countries may designated as a free trade zone.

” They also export into Nigeria it’s a very interesting concept really they’re meant for export so they export to Ghana, they export to west Africa, they export outside Africa now with AFCFTA they export to all other African countries but coming into Nigeria they also export into Nigeria so that cuts that cost of freight”

The free trade zone aims at providing job opportunities for Nigeria’s rapid growing population.

Tunisian President Decides to Strengthen Diplomatic Ties With Syria

0

Tunisian President Kais Saied has decided to strengthen diplomatic ties with Syria, the presidency said on Thursday, the clearest sign yet of Tunisia’s intention to fully restore relations days after a deadly earthquake that has devastated large parts of Syria.

“The cut 7 diplomatic relations with Syria nearly a decade ago to protest the government’s brutal crackdown on protesters and activists opposed to the regime of President Bashar al-Assad.”

After that, Tunisia reinstituted a limited diplomatic mission to Syria in 2017, in part to help track more than 3,000 Tunisian militants fighting in Syria.

The issue of the Syrian regime is an internal matter that concerns only the Syrians,” Saied said in statement following a meeting with his country’s foreign affairs minister.

He added that as ” not to the regime.”

Assad is seeking political advantage from the earthquake that has devastated large parts of Syria and Turkey, pressing for foreign aid to be delivered through his territory as he aims to chip away at his international isolation, analysts say.

Tunisia sent aid planes to Syria, including rescue and civil protection teams, which arrived at Aleppo airport under the control of the Syrian regime.

Since Saied took control of almost all powers in July 2021 when he closed parliament and dismissed the government, Tunisia has sent ‘signals’ it was open to changing its diplomatic stance with Syria.
