Sahel Military Games: Irabor Charges AFN Athletes On Winning Laurels

0

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Lucky Irabor has charged sports men and women of the Nigerian Armed Forces (AFN), selected to participate at the Sahel Military Games slated for 9 – 17 October 2021 in Abuja to ensure that they make the nation proud by winning laurels.

Addressing the athletes during the closing ceremony of the Armed Forces Inter-Service Competition held in Abuja, the CDS spurred those that will be selected for the 3 weeks camping to commit their energy and concentration to the training in order to top the medals table at the Organization of Military Sport in Africa (OSMA) Sahel Games.

General Irabor, who was represented by the Chief of Defence Policy and Plans, Air Vice Marshal Dahiru Sanda, also commended the athletes for high level of discipline and sportsmanship which won them  laurels, thus leading to their selection for the Sahel games.

The Defence Chief remarked that the first OSMA Sahel Military  Games for “Peace and Solidarity”is aimed at exploring the non-kinetic aspect of military operations to mitigate the war against insurgency and banditry ravaging some countries in the Sahel region.

He said as a combat force, “the Nigerian military will continue to prioritize the mental and physical fitness and readiness of its personnel to defend the nation.” According to General Irabor, aside the modern weapon system, it is  physically and mentally prepared personnel that will make the difference in any conflict.

The CDS reassured Nigerians of the commitment of the military in the executing of its Constitutional roles, and also meeting the statutory responsibility of protecting the nation’s territorial integrity. He thanked President Muhammadu Buhari for supporting the operational engagements of the military.

The Chief of Defence Training and Operations (CDTOPS), Major General Adeyemi Yekini, earlier in his welcome address, said the Armed Forces Inter-Service competition was another landmark achievement under the current leadership of the AFN.

General Yekini said this feat has“brought to the fore, the CDS strategy to promote and inculcate the core values of sporting activities, which are integrity, excellence and service delivery.”

The CDTOPS further identified service efficiency and effectiveness, as well as fostering of espirit-de-corps, among the reason for hosting the Inter-Service Competition.

Speaking on preparation for the Sahel games, General Yekini disclosed that a total of 189 athletes are expected to compete in 3 sporting events which are football, marathon and golf, according to him, the games would be decided on medal-scoring basis.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Army won the first position at the Armed Forces Inter-Service competition, with a total of 19 medals, including 9 gold, 4 silver and 6 bronze. Team Nigerian Navy came second by winning nine medals, including 3 gold, 1 silver and 5 bronze, while the Nigerian Air Force came third with 7 silver and 1 bronze.

The Commandant, National Defence College, Departmental and Branch Chiefs from the Defence and Services Headquarters were among the top military brass that graced event.

The highlight of the event was the presentation of medals to individual winners and trophies to winning teams in each of the games.

Late De Gea Save Secures Points For Manchester United

0

Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea saved a last minute penalty from Mark Noble to secure a 2-1 away Premier League victory against West Ham at the London Stadium.

Mason Greenwood, Raphael Varane and Scott McTominay came into the United team with Cristiano Ronaldo starting upfront. United started the better of the two sides with chances from Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes as they dominated possession. Jarred Bowen almost scored but his attempt was brilliantly blocked by Raphael Varane.

West Ham then took the lead as Bowen drifted across the face of the Manchester United area and laid the ball off to Said Benrahma, whose shot deflected off Varane and past the helpless De Gea.

The lead would last barely four minutes, however, with Ronaldo finding space at the back post to reach Fernandes’ cross and then reacting fastest when his initial effort was saved to tap in the equaliser.

It was Ronaldo’s fourth goal of the Premier League season.

Ronaldo almost scored in the 42nd minute but Fabianski had other ideas, producing another superb low save to keep out the Portuguese’s drive, before Nikola Vlasic fired a shot over the bar before the halftime whistle.

In second half, Fabianski came to West Ham’s rescue again when Fernandes put Ronaldo through on goal, but his shot was saved by the goalkeeper. However, as both sides looked for the winner, substitute Jessie Lingard beautifully curled the ball into the top corner of the West Ham goal to put United in front.

Lingard, who was on the pitch for about 15 minutes, looked to have snatched all three points for Manchester United in dramatic fashion. However, there was a late twist in the thrilling encounter at the London stadium.

West Ham were given a glimmer of hope to rescue a point from the game when Luke Shaw was penalised for handling Andriy Yarmolenko’s cross in the penalty area after a VAR review. Captain Mark Noble was brought on with the sole purpose of taking the penalty. However, De Gea saved brilliantly to deny West Ham a point.

The victory lifts Manchester United joint-top of the Premier League, level on 13 points with Liverpool, while West Ham remain in eighth having suffered their first defeat of the season.

“I’ve seen Noble score so many penalties, but David has saved two points for us today,” Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said. “I was pleased with the attacking football and movement, we have to work better defensively, that is something we will work on.”

Manchester United and West Ham will meet in the third round of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday. Manchester United will then host Aston Villa in the Premier League on Saturday, while West Ham travel to Leeds.

Jo’burg township takes part in World Clean-up Day

0

South Africans living in Alexandra, Johannesburg marked World clean-up Day on Saturday by cleaning the banks of the polluted Jukskei river.

The river is a source of drinking water for the residents but there is a serious problem with sewage pollution on the river due to an aging infrastructure and a backlog of maintenance.

“I thought it would be a great thing for me to take part in this initiative as it benefits the environment and also the people around the place” said Faith Masango, a volunteer.

“The water that is in the Jukskei is the one that we are drinking. So we had to clean the river, we had to make sure that the river is clean. No matter we don’t clean the whole Jukskei, but wherever we have cleaned is to make sure that continuity of cleaning of the river, that it continues” Junky Matlala, community leader added.

For Bianca Wannenburg, one of the organisers, a key aim was to demonstrate to residents that it is possible to restore the river to a state where it is safe to swim in it and drink the water.

“It’s the community that’s the closest to the river that I feel is the most impacted as well, and we’re hoping that going forward that they will come and mobilise and see the significance of the river. You know, one day we want to have clean rivers where you can actually swim in them again. You can drink it again. And we want to show and empower communities that it is achievable to get that back.”

Around 50 million volunteers in 180 countries have picked up litter beside rivers, on beaches, and in forests on World clean-up Day.

Each year eight million tons of plastic end up in the oceans, which are also where 70 percent of the world’s oxygen is generated.

Police arrest 7 Gombe health workers for products diversion

0

The Gombe State Ministry of Health has announced the arrest of seven Staff of the State Primary Healthcare Development Department in Kwami and Billiri Local Government Areas, for diverting 109 bales of  Insecticide Treated nets, meant for free distribution to the residents of the state.

Speaking with journalists in Gombe, the State Commissioner of Health, Dr. Habu Dahiru, said 100 of the bales of the nets were from Kwami Local Government Area, with four people allegedly implicated in the matter, while the remaining nine bales were from Billiri LGA, where 3 staff of the Primary Healthcare Department were being implicated in it as well.

Dr. Dahiru said based on information of a possible diversion, the police were alerted, the vehicles conveying the nets impounded and the suspected parties arrested,  based on tip-offs from the public.

He said each of the 109 bales of the Insecticide Treated Nets contained 50 pieces of nets, thereby making it 5, 450 pieces of the nets intended for diversion.

“On 10th September, a team of state personnel, who were charged with the responsibility of keeping an eye on the process to ensure that the nets do not slip into the wrong hands was tipped by an informant that the nets were loaded into a truck in one of the markets in Gombe Metropolis. These were with the sole intent of diverting them for personal aggrandizement,” Dr. Habu said.

He said The Gombe State Government, with the support of the Global Fund and other partners, Catholic Relief Services and National Malaria Elimination Programme, were distributing free Insecticide Treated nets in Gombe State.

According to him, the door-to-door strategy was adopted to ensure that every citizen of the state received the nets, intended to reduce the burden of Malaria in the state, especially in the most vulnerable groups, such as women and children.

Dr. Dahiru said investigations had implicated some independent marketers, who had also been arrested and identified their co-conspirators, who happened to be four staff of Kwami Local Government Are PHC Department and in police custody, while further investigations continued to unravel the actual occurrence.

“On the same note, the state personnel were tipped off by an informant that a similar situation was unfolding in Billiri LGA.

The police were informed and three staff of the Billiri PHC department were fingered and arrested and they are all in police custody,” said Dr. Dahiru.

He further appreciated the Nigeria Police Force, the DSS and members of the Civil Defence Corps for their roles in ensuring the recovery of the nets.

He said, if found guilty, the culprits would be dealt with according to the civil service rule.

Tunisians protest against President Saied

0

Hundreds of protester have marched through central Tunis to demand a return to parliamentary democracy after a July power grab by President Kais Saied.

The march was tightly marshalled by security forces on the ground and an interior ministry surveillance drone overhead, journalists reported.

Most of the protesters were supporters of the Islamist-inspired Ennahdha party, which formed the largest bloc in parliament before its dissolution by the president.

“The people want the collapse of the coup,” the protesters chanted. “We want legitimacy.”

On 25th July, Saied sacked the government, suspended parliament, removed lawmakers’ immunity and put himself in charge of all prosecutions.

Saied has renewed the measures for a second 30-day period, and has yet to respond to calls for a roadmap for lifting them.

“This is a demonstration to show that there are Tunisian men and women who reject the coup and the steps taken by President Saied,” said Jawhar Ben Mbarek, a prominent leftist among the protesters.

A few dozen Saied supporters held a counterdemonstration.

Saied insists his actions are guaranteed by Article 80 of the constitution, which stipulates the head of state can take “exceptional measures” in case of an “imminent danger” to national security.

Algerians react to death of former President Bouteflika

0

Algerians react to the death of former President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, who ruled Algeria for two decades before resigning in 2019 as huge protests engulfed the country.

The former strongman had left office in April 2019 under pressure from the military, following weeks of demonstrations over his bid to run for a fifth term in office.

After quitting, he had stayed out of the public eye at a residence in western Algiers.

Bouteflika became president of Algeria in 1999 as the former French colony emerged from a decade of civil war that killed nearly 200,000 people.

Dubbed “Boutef” by Algerians, he initially won respect for helping foster peace, notably with an amnesty law that prompted thousands of Islamist fighters to hand in their weapons.

Bouteflika went on to be elected for three more consecutive five-year terms, most recently in 2014.

Journalist Farid Alilat, who has written a biography of Bouteflika, says that at the height of his rule in the early 2000s, the president had “all the levers of power”.

Crucially, he was backed by the army and the intelligence services.

Algeria was largely spared the wave of uprisings that swept the Arab world in 2011, with many crediting still-painful memories of the conflict in the 1990s for keeping a lid on tensions.

But Bouteflika’s rule was marked by growing corruption, leaving many Algerians wondering how a country with vast oil wealth could end up with poor infrastructure and high unemployment that pushed many young people overseas.

In his later years, Bouteflika’s ill health started weighing on his credibility as a leader.

Despite suffering a mini-stroke in April 2013 that affected his speech and forced him to use a wheelchair, he decided to seek a fourth mandate despite growing public doubts about his ability to rule.

His bid in 2019 for a fifth term sparked angry protests that soon grew into a mass movement against his regime.

When he lost the backing of the army, he was forced to step down.

The Hirak mass protests continued, with demands for a full overhaul of the ruling system in place since Algeria’s independence from France in 1962.

But while some key Bouteflika-era figures were eventually jailed in corruption cases, including Bouteflika’s powerful brother Said, the long-sought changes did not happen.

Bouteflika’s successor Abdelmadjid Tebboune was elected in late 2019 on record low turnout, with the Hirak calling for a boycott.

A referendum on a constitutional amendment seen as aiming to torpedo the Hirak generated even less interest from voters.

But the protest movement was suspended because of the coronavirus pandemic and has struggled to regain momentum as the government cracks down on opposition.

According to the CNLD prisoners’ group, around 200 people are in jail in connection with the Hirak or over individual freedoms.

And with the Bouteflika-era old guard still largely ruling the country, the legacy of two decades of his rule is mixed.

“For his entire life, Abdelaziz Bouteflika was driven by two obsessions: take power and keep it at any price,” said Alilat.

“But it was this obsession… that sparked the revolt that drove him from power.”
