0

The management of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC has urged corps members  to equip themselves with modern trends in Agricultural practices to improve productivity.

The  Director-General of the  NYSC, Brigadier General Shuaibu Ibrahim gave the advise during a virtual seminar organised by Corps Members serving at the International Institute for Tropical Agriculture, Ibadan.

He noted that the NYSC Management seeks active participation of Corps Members in agriculture which is in alignment with Federal Government’s drive to boost agriculture, so as to diversify national economy from over dependence on oil.

According to the Director, Press and Public Relations, Mrs Adenike Adeyemi, the  Director General said the NYSC has resuscitated its farms and other ventures for imparting skills to Corps Members, while also giving attention to NYSC Skills Acquisition programme, in order to empower Corps Members with skills that would provide them with alternative sources of livelihood after service.

“I call on Corps Members to leverage on the opportunity provided by this seminar to equip themselves with modern trend in agriculture.”

“I urge you to sustain the momentum and continue to reach out to other Corps Members and youths so as to introduce digital delivery tools in agriculture,” the director general said.

The Director-General also stated that NYSC Scheme would continue to provide a conducive environment for Corps Members to acquire skills through its ventures, skill acquisition programmes and collaborations with other agencies.

He commended the organisers of the seminar, saying the synergy between the NYSC Scheme and the International Institute for Tropical Agriculture, IITA was yielding positive results that would lead to the emergence of youths that would make their mark in agro-business, thus, becoming employers of labour, instead of job seekers.

Ibrahim also urged Corps Members to key into other youth- empowerment programmes of the Federal Government such as the seventy- five billion Naira Youth Investment Trust Fund, National Young Farmers Scheme, Youth Initiative for Sustainable Agriculture in Nigeria and other programmes designed to ensure that youths were self reliant.

The Deputy Director-General, Corporate Services, IITA Ibadan, south- west Nigeria, Hilde Koper-Limbourg said IITA has the mandate to reduce food scarcity while appealing to the Corps Members to embrace agro-business that would make them wealth and job creators.

Professor Sanni Lateef, Project Manager Basics ll, in his paper, urged the Corps Members to make a critical understudy of the prevailing food shortage and proffer solutions.

He admonished the Corps Members to build themselves into a team for greater prospects in future.

Speakers during the seminar include; Virologist and Head of Germplasm Health Unit, Dr Lava Kumar among others.

Chad to deploy troops to tackle jihadists on borders

0

Chad’s President Idriss Déby says he is deploying soldiers to the border with Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso as G5 Sahel countries meet to discuss security in the region.

Chad has in the past said it would deploy in the “three border zone” but did not.

The Sahel region heads of state are meeting in Chad’s capital, N’Djamena, and French President, Emmanuel Macron will join the meeting via video link.

International support
President Déby has called for more international support to the Sahel countries in their fight against extremists.

He said poverty in the region had made it easier for young people to be recruited by extremists and said development funds would help alleviate it.

France has 5,100 troops in the Sahel region which has been a front line in the war against Islamist militancy for almost a decade.

Militants from the Group to Support Islam and Muslims (GSIM), which is linked to al-Qaeda, have been carrying out attacks.

“We are all impressed with the matches being on television and the special app (NPFL.TV) and have enjoyed the quality of production which compares to the very best anywhere.

Okonjo-Iweala will boost trade cooperation globally – Nigerian Trade Union

The Nigerian Union of Traders in Ghana (NUTAG), said the emergence of Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala as the Director-General (DG) of the World Trade Organization (WTO) would boost trade cooperation around the world.

The President of the union, Mr  Chukwuemeka Nnaji, stated this during a telephone conversation with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja. Okonjo-Iweala emerged as the unanimous choice for the position of DG, becoming the trade body’s first female and first African leader.

Nnaji said: “We join Nigeria’s business community in the diaspora to congratulate the Lioness of Africa as the new DG of the WTO. We are so encouraged that she sailed through, notwithstanding numerous challenges she had to dismantle on her way, but in the end, she successfully reached the ultimate expectation.

“We are so convinced that Okonjo-Iweala will do very well, her track records have shown that she has all it takes to move WTO forward.

“The major task now is how to deal with China and the United States of America trade issues, which have so far held the world trade cooperation to a standstill.

“We commend her competence and skill in negotiation which she applied during her tenure as Minister of Finance and also as Economic manager in Nigeria, we believe she will make a positive impact as DG of WTO.”

Further reports state that Okonjo-Iweala’s confirmation was an outcome of WTO’s 164 members’ unanimous selection which makes her the successor to Roberto Azevêdo, who left office on 31 August 2020. Okonjo-Iweala’s term, which is renewable, will expire on 31 August 2025.

Speaking at a briefing, the new DG said she was ready to face the business on the ground and tackle the challenges of the WTO.
