Commonwealth Day: Nigeria pledges to empower girls and women

The Nigerian government has restated its commitment to empower more women and girls through sustainable education programmes across thce country.

Nigeria’s Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, stated this during the media briefing held ahead of the commemoration of the 2021 Commonwealth Day.

Adamu also stated that for the 2021 celebration, members of the Commonwealth nations through inter-related networks would put together their resources to achieve innovations that would protect their collective natural resources.

The theme for this year’s commemoration is ‘Delivering a common future: Connecting, Innovating and Transforming’.

“This was the same theme used in 2020 and was to also stand as the motif for the biennial commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), which was postponed from last year to June 2021,due to COVID 19 pandemic”, Adamu said.

Safe-guarding against Covid-19
Adamu said that the Nigerian government will evolve measures to guard against Covid-19 pandemic for the common good of all member countries.

For 2021, the members of the Commonwealth of nations through interrelated networks would put together their resources and expertise to achieve innovations that would protect their collective natural resources, ensure ocean health, empower women and girls, sustain democratic governance, boost trade and education, evolve measures to guard against Covid-19 pandemic for the common goal of all member countries”, he added.

The activities on the line-up to mark the 2021 Commonwealth Day in Nigeria include: quiz competition based on common issues around the commonwealth, procession of the commonwealth flags, poetry recitations, cultural dance and exhibitions by students among others.

The Commonwealth Day is the annual celebration of the 54 Commonwealth of Nations often held on the second Monday in March.
