Olayinka fires Slavia Praha to Europa League quarterfinals

0

Peter Olayinka scored one of the goals for Slavia Praha to reach the last-eight of the UEFA Europa League, but it was not so great for fellow Nigeria star Leon Balogun as he was sent off in the same game.

Olayinka headed his Czech club ahead after just 14 minutes in the Round of 16 reverse tie at Scottish giants Rangers.

The visitors will go on to double their lead to go through 3-1 on aggregate after the first leg ended 1-1.

But it was double blow for Rangers as Super Eagles defender Leon Balogun was sent off after a second booking.

Balogun missed the first clash through suspension.

Fellow Eagles star Joe Aribo also started for Rangers, who again crashed out of the competition at the same stage last year.

Aribo was also booked late on.

North Korea cuts diplomatic ties with Malaysia over U.S extradition

0

North Korea said it would cut diplomatic relations with Malaysia after a court in the Southeast Asian nation ruled that a North Korean man could be extradited to the United States to face money-laundering charges, state media reported on Friday.

North Korea’s foreign affairs ministry also warned Washington would “pay a price”, in a statement carried by the state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

The North Korean statement did not name its citizen, but in early March, Malaysia’s top court ruled that a North Korean man, Mun Chol Myong, could be extradited.

Mun had lived in Malaysia for a decade and was arrested in May 2019 after US authorities requested his extradition. Malaysia’s government approved the request, but Mun challenged the bid.

In his affidavit, Mun denied accusations by the US that he was involved in supplying prohibited luxury goods from Singapore to North Korea in violation of UN sanctions while working in the city-state before moving to Malaysia in 2008.

He denied that he had laundered funds through front companies and that he issued fraudulent documents to support illicit shipments to his country. He said in his affidavit that he was the victim of a “politically motivated” extradition request aimed at pressuring North Korea over its missile program.

The North Korean foreign ministry called the extradition a “nefarious act and unpardonably heavy crime” by Malaysian authorities, who had “offered our citizen as a sacrifice of the US hostile move in defiance of the acknowledged international laws.”

Malaysia’s actions had destroyed “the entire foundation of the bilateral relations based on the respect for sovereignty,” it said.

Malaysia’s foreign ministry said in a statement on Friday that it “deeply regrets” North Korea’s decision to sever tiers.

“Malaysia denounces the decision as unfriendly and unconstructive, disrespecting the spirit of mutual respect and good neighbourly relations among members of the international community,” the ministry said.

It added that the decision was “clearly unwarranted, disproportionate and certainly disruptive towards the promotion of peace, stability and prosperity of our region”.

The ministry defended the extradition of Mun, saying it was only carried out after proper legal process was followed, and criticised North Korea for pressuring it to intervene in the case.

Kuala Lumpur’s once-close ties with North Korea deteriorated sharply after North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s estranged brother, Kim Jong Nam, was killed at a Kuala Lumpur airport in February 2017 when two women smeared his face with VX nerve agent, which the United Nations lists as a weapon of mass destruction.

Malaysia suspended the operation of its embassy in Pyongyang once it secured the safe return of nine citizens held in Pyongyang in exchange for the release of Kim Jong Nam’s body.

Despite a promise by Malaysia’s then-premier Mahathir Mohamad during an apparent thaw in diplomatic relations in 2018, the embassy never resumed operations.

North Korea had used Malaysia as a hub for its arms export operation, and to set up business entities for funnelling money to North Korea’s leadership.

It currently maintains an embassy in an upmarket residential district of Kuala Lumpur.

The statement did not mention what Pyongyang’s plans for the embassy.

Ousted Myanmar lawmakers eye ICC probe as more deaths reported

0

Ousted Myanmar lawmakers explored whether the International Criminal Court can investigate crimes against humanity since a Feb. 1 coup after security forces shot dead at least one opponent of military rule on Friday.

Military and police have used increasingly violent tactics to suppress demonstrations by supporters of detained elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi but that has not put off the protests, with crowds out again in several towns.

Security forces used teargas to disperse protesters in the central town of Aungban and later opened fire, media and a witness reported.

Police in the main city of Yangon forced people to clear protesters’ barricades, residents said, while demonstrators were also out in the second city of Mandalay, the central towns of Myingyan and Katha, and the eastern town of Myawaddy, witnesses and media reported.

The total number killed in weeks of unrest has risen to at least 224, the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners activist group said earlier.

A junta spokesman has said security forces have used force only when necessary but critics have disapproved that explanation.

Myanmar’s U.N. envoy, who publicly broke with the junta, said a committee of ousted lawmakers was looking at ways people can be held accountable for violence following the coup.

“The ICC is one of them,” Kyaw Moe Tun told an event in New York. “We are not a state party to the ICC, but we need to … explore the ways and means to bring the case to the ICC.”

In Geneva, United Nations human rights experts denounced forced evictions, arbitrary detentions and the killings of pro-democracy protesters. They said foreign governments should consider pursuing those responsible for crimes against humanity.

Hundreds have fled towns and cities since the coup and are sheltering in areas controlled by ethnic minority militias on the Thai border, an official from one group said.

People have also crossed the western border into India.

Nobel peace laureate Suu Kyi, 75, is hugely popular for her decades-long campaign for democracy.

She is being detained at an undisclosed location while facing accusations of bribery and other crimes which could see her banned from politics and jailed if convicted. Her lawyer says the charges are trumped up.

Western countries have condemned the coup and called for an end to the violence and for Suu Kyi’s release. Asian neighbours have offered to help find a solution, but Myanmar’s military has shown no sign of seeking reconciliation.

Coup leader General Min Aung Hlaing took part in a video conference with other Southeast Asian defence chiefs on Thursday, his first international engagement since seizing power, state television showed.

During the meeting, the head of Indonesia’s armed forces, Hadi Tjahjanto, expressed concern over the situation in Myanmar, the Indonesian military said on its website. Indonesia’s army ruled for years but later completely withdrew from politics.

Indonesia had led diplomatic efforts in Southeast Asia to resolve the crisis but a March 3 regional meeting it helped coordinate failed to make headway.

EU SANCTIONS

The European Union is due to place sanctions on individual military figures on Monday and then target businesses they run in what would be its most significant response since the coup.

The EU’s expected sanctions follow a U.S. decision last month to target the military and its business interests. Britain last month froze the assets and placed travel bans on three generals.

The army has defended its takeover, saying its accusations of fraud in a Nov. 8 election swept by Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy were rejected by the electoral commission. It has promised a new election but not set a date.

Information within Myanmar is becoming increasingly difficult to verify after authorities have restricted the internet services that protesters use to organise and post reports and pictures.

About 37 journalists have been arrested, including 19 who remain in detention, the U.N. human rights office said.

Kaduna Governor restates commitment to tackle banditry

0

Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State has restated his administration’s resolve not to allow bandits to disrupt the education system.

El-Rufai said this when the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Isiaka Amao, visited him.

The governor said the state government would do everything possible to stop bandits from disrupting the state’s education system or destroy the future of the children.

He commended security agencies for their steadfastness in the fight against banditry and insurgency in some parts of the country.

“You have been doing so much to keep the country safe, we cannot commend you enough.

“We shall keep our schools open, we are confident that we shall win the fight against banditry, we are sure that our schools will remain functional,” he said.

El-Rufai further said that the decision of the government followed the popular opinion raised at a stakeholders meeting.

“At that meeting with senior government officials, heads of security agencies, civil society and religious groups, it was agreed that our schools should remain open.

“We also agreed that only the most vulnerable schools should be shut down, this is because they cannot be easily accessed due to the terrain of their location,” he said.

The governor said that with the gallantry and preparedness of the security agencies, recent attempts by bandits to abduct school children `had not been fully successful’.

El-Rufai pointed out that although there were still security challenges in the country, the security agencies had shown an enormous capacity to surmount them.

Earlier, the Chief of Air Staff said that his visit was to assess the preparedness of the Air Training Command, whose personnel are fighting the bandits in the North West.

Amao said that the security agencies were determined to wipe out the bandits to enable members of the public go about their lawful duties without fears.

Gunmen kill 13 Police officers in an ambush in Mexico

0

Gunmen apparently from a drug gang ambushed a police convoy in central Mexico, killing eight state police officers and five prosecution investigators in a hail of gunfire, authorities said.

The killing of the 13 law enforcement officers in the State of Mexico on Thursday was the country’s single biggest slaying of law enforcement since October 2019, when cartel gunmen ambushed and killed 14 state police officers in the neighbouring state of Michoacan.

Photos of the grisly scene circulated on social media, showing a bullet-riddled police car and an unmarked truck, along with officers’ bodies scattered along the street or still inside the car.

The convoy of security personnel was attacked in broad daylight by suspected gang members in the Llano Grande area in the municipality of Coatepec Harinas as it patrolled the area, said Rodrigo Martinez-Celis, the security minister for the State of Mexico.

“This attack is an affront to the Mexican state. We will respond with all force and support of the law,” the minister said in an address to the media.

While Mexico State contains suburbs of the capital, it also includes lawless mountain and scrublands such as the one where the attack occurred.

The area is southwest of Mexico City and about 64 kilometres (40 miles) south of the city of Toluca, the capital of the populous State of Mexico, which surrounds much of the capital.

Mexico’s National Guard militarised police and the armed forces are searching by land and air for the perpetrators.

It was unclear how many suspected criminals were killed or wounded in the incident, or if it involved any of the country’s main drug cartels.

The attack appears to present a challenge for President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who has pursued a strategy of not directly confronting drug cartels in an effort to avoid violence.

Coking Coal climbs above $90/tonne for first time in 2 years

The coal market extended its upward momentum, with futures climbing above the $90 per tonne level for the first time since March 2019.

Top consumer, China, is expected to face shortages in imports of coking coal from major supplier Mongolia after fresh COVID-19 restrictions were reintroduced at the Ganqimadodu border, the gateway for Mongolia coking coal to China, on March 16th.

Coal prices are up almost 80% from a nearly 4-year low of $50.45/tonne hit in August, supported by government policies, particularly China’s ban on Australian coal imports and supply issues after producers cut on output as prices weakened during the height of the lockdowns across Asia.

Coal is the major fuel used for generating electricity worldwide. China is the biggest producer and consumer of coal. Other big producers include: United States, India, Australia, Indonesia, Russia, South Africa, Germany and Poland.

The biggest exporters of coal are: Indonesia, Australia, Russia, United States, Colombia, South Africa and Kazakhstan.

African artists like Focalistic, Fuse ODG, Olamide, as well as some of the leading female faces of dance music in Africa – Moonchild Sanelly, Sho Madjozi, Niniola, and Amapiano’s Lady Du are featured.

In the recently released campaign video directed by South African filmmaker Zandi Tisani, groups of acclaimed and talented young dancers — like Nigeria’s Boluwatife, Ghana’s DWP Acade and South Africa’s Kamo Mpela– in Johannesburg, London, Lagos, Accra, and New York showcase a barrage of synchronized dance moves on rooftops, alleyways and roads as they dance to Focalistic’s hit ‘Ke Star’.
