COVID-19: China administers 65 million vaccine doses

0

China, which has been accelerating efforts to vaccinate its population for COVID-19, had administered about 65 million doses as of Sunday, an official with China’s National Health Commission told a news briefing on Monday.

While China was among the first countries to begin administering vaccines last year and has been exporting millions of doses of its domestically developed shots to other countries, the vaccination rate for its own population fell behind those of countries such as Israel and the United States.

China has approved four domestically developed vaccines.

The country’s capital city, Beijing, had given 10 million doses, and over 3 million people have received two doses, the official Beijing Daily said.

The country aims to inoculate 40% of its 1.4 billion people by the end of June, according to state media, a target that will require that China administer some 4 million doses per day on average a significant acceleration from the rate of fewer than 1 million per day since the start of March.

“Chinese vaccine manufacturers are still expanding, and with the continuous release of production capacity, the output will gradually increase,” said Tian Yulong, an official with the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.

He did not disclose China’s vaccine production rate or supply levels.

Worst sandstorm in a decade hits Beijing

0

China is experiencing the most severe sandstorm in a decade as 12 provinces in the northern part of the country are blanketed in yellow sand and dust, according to a notice issued by China’s National Meteorological Centre on Monday.

China Meteorological Administration this morning, said sandstorms had spread from Inner Mongolia into the provinces of Gansu, Shanxi and Hebei, which surrounds Beijing.

The National Meteorological Centre issued a “yellow” sandstorm warning on Monday morning, the second to last in China’s four-tier colour-coded weather warning system, reminding the public in the affected regions to close doors and windows and wear masks and scarves to protect themselves. It also warned the sandstorm would likely last through Monday.

Beijing faces regular sandstorms in March and April due to its proximity to the massive Gobi desert as well as deforestation and soil erosion throughout northern China.

Heavy sandstorms also hit neighbouring Mongolia, with at least 341 people reported missing, according to China’s state news agency Xinhua.

China has been trying to reforest and restore the ecology of the region to limit how much sand is blown into the capital.

Beijing has planted a “great green wall” of trees to trap incoming dust, and has also tried to create air corridors that channel the wind and allow sand and other pollutants to pass through more quickly.

The environment ministry said last year that the situation had improved, with the first storms now arriving much later in the year and not lasting as long as they did a decade ago.

IOC To Recommend Suitable COVID-19 Vaccines For Nigerian Athletes

0

Although the Federal Government of Nigeria settled for the AstraZeneca vaccine, Nigerian athletes billed for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games may be forced to take only the shot recommended by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

The Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC)  said that the IOC has the sole responsibility of recommending the vaccine variance suitable for athletes from different parts of the world ahead of the Olympics scheduled for Japan in July.

The NOC said the IOC, which is currently working with the World Health Organisation (WHO) on safety requirements for the Games, would in due time make the final recommendation to member countries on the right COVID-19 vaccination for athletes.

According to the NOC Media Officer, Phemmy Adetula, the IOC’s stance on the vaccines is to ensure that athletes adhere strictly to legal drug requirements.

“The IOC will hold its Congress soon and at the meeting decide on the brand of vaccines that will not have side effects on the athletes,” Adetula said.“The IOC is working closely with WHO to reach a resolution on this.”

“Their decision will be communicated to NOC immediately after the congress. I don’t think any Nigerian athlete would be forced to take the vaccines, but if it is compulsory in Japan, the athletes would have no choice but to take it there.”

Adetula disclosed that the IOC would donate vaccines to countries participating at the Olympics, adding that jabs meant for Nigeria will arrive in the country ahead of the Games.

Tthe outbreak of COVID-19 virus last year forced the postponement of Tokyo 2020 Olympics for the first time in its history. The opening ceremony of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games will now hold on July 23, 2021.

NPFL: Rangers beats Adamawa, Goes Joint Top With Kwara

0

The Enugu Rangers went joint top of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) table with Kwara United, after beating a very defensive Adamawa United 1-0 at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium in Enugu on Match-day 15.

The Flying Antelopes had started strong in a one sided first half with Adamawa United playing catch up. However, the Enugu side failed to make the best of ball possession with Christian Nnaji the major culprit in a first 45 minutes that ended 0-0.

The second half started as they first did with Rangers asking all the questions and encountering much resistance from Adamawa. When it looked like the game was heading for a draw, Uche John started an attack with a headed pass to substitute Eliagwu. He wasted no time in finding Chignons Ezekwe, who simply tapped in for the only goal of the encounter.

With the win Rangers joined Kwara United as joint leaders but second with 27 points from 15 games and will next take on Katsina United on Thursday. Adamawa United remains at the bottom of the league log and will be taking on Abia Warriors in Gombe.

Roger Federer Aims To Be ‘100%’ At Wimbledon Tournament

0

Tennis sensation Roger Federer who has just announced that he will not play in Dubai, says he aims to be 100% at the Wimbledon Tournament scheduled to start on the 28th of June 2021.

The Swiss international made his comeback against Nikolos Basilashvili and Dan Evans after months out through injury, and he continues his recovery to make the Wimbledon event.

“I have been out for so long that I am delighted to have had the opportunity to play three sets against two of the best players on the Tour,” Federer said at a press conference. “This is an important step for me. As I said: I’m not 100% yet. I feel it, I feel it and I see it.”

“The important thing for me is to be 100% ahead of the season on the grass. I am still working and building my path; this is just a stepping stone.I’m happy with the way I played and the way I felt on the pitch today.”

“I definitely felt better against Evans physically, but Basilashvili plays a completely different tennis than him. Of course I would have liked to play tomorrow (Dubai) too, don’t get me wrong. But at the same time I’m happy to be able to rest and my performance.”

“I’m happy to be back playing on the Tour. I am glad I came here to Doha. So it’s really a positive return for me. I’m really happy,” he added.

Federer then spoke bluntly about his true goal during the 2021 Australian Open that he missed because of his injury.

“When I had my second surgery, I immediately thought about the Australian Open. When I realized that progress was minimal and that I needed to be more careful, however, I knew I had to change my schedule,” Federer said.

“Over the next four months, my team and I will need to be good at evaluating the calendar and figuring out how much work my body can handle. This is the best way to prepare for my real start to the season, which is the one on grass.”

“I think playing matches is important to me, and the season on clay comes before the season on grass. From this point of view, I have no choice but to play on clay. I don’t know if it will be bad for me; I’ll only know in training,” he added.
