Coal mine accident in China’s Chongqing kills 18

0

Eighteen people have died after being trapped in a mine in China’s southwestern city of Chongqing, reports said on Saturday, the region’s second such accident in just over two months.

The dead were among 24 people trapped underground by excessive levels of carbon monoxide gas at the Diaoshuidong coal mine, the agency said, adding that one survivor had been rescued while search efforts continue.

The incident, which occurred at about 5 p.m. (0900 GMT) Friday evening in a mine shut for more than two months as the company dismantled underground equipment, is being investigated, it added.

China’s mines are among the world’s deadliest, with 16 deaths reported in late September after high levels of carbon monoxide trapped miners at the Songzao coal mine in Chongqing.

’’Diaoshuidong, built in 1975 and run since 1998 as a private enterprise, is a high-gas mine with annual capacity of 120,000 tonnes of coal’’, Xinhua said.

’’In 2013, three people were killed and two injured in a hydrogen sulphide poisoning incident at the mine’’, it added.

0

By Jack Acheme & Tukur Arab, Kano

Nigerians have been urged not to allow detractors to divide or destroy the nation, despite the challenges.

National leader of the All Progressive Congress, APC,  Senator Ahmed Tinubu gave the advice at the marriage ceremony of the daughter of renowned Islamic cleric and educationist Shiek Mohammed Bin- Uthman in Kano State.

Tinubu said the detractors of the country would not stop wanting to divide the country but people should become more united against them so that they will not win the battle.

“We will not allow detractors divide or destroy this country. The dividers will not stop at wanting to divide Nigeria but we should not allow them….. The unity of this country is more important to me,” said Tinubu.

He described the Governor of Kano State Dr. Umar Ganduje as a great thinker and lover of unity of the country Nigeria, while commending him on his giant strides in infrastructural development of the state.

“Ganduje is one of the great thinkers of the unity of this country. The flyover and the other projects that I have seen while being driven down here is an evident of hard work for the benefit of the people,” Tinubu said.

Senator Tinubu described the father of the bride Sheik Bello Othman as “a great lover of Nigeria, progressive thinker with highly respected followers.”

“You have build so many along the line of education and that is why, when you call many people follow. I’m glad about your appreciation of  the symbolic visit,” he said.

“Nigeria is passing through alot of difficult times but it is only our togetherness that can solve the problem,” Sheik Bin-Uthman said.

US decision to withdraw troops dismays some Somalis

0

President Donald Trump’s decision to pull U.S. troops out of Somalia in the waning days of his presidency triggered dismay on Saturday from some Somalis, who appealed to the incoming U.S. president to reverse the decision.

“The U.S. decision to pull troops out of Somalia at this critical stage in the successful fight against al-Shabaab and their global terrorist network is extremely regrettable,” Senator Ayub Ismail Yusuf said, referring to the al Qaida-linked al Shabaab insurgency.

“U.S. troops have made a huge contribution and had great impact on the training and operational effectiveness of Somali soldiers,” said Yusuf, a member of Somalia’s Senate Foreign Affairs Committee.

He tagged U.S. President-elect Joe Biden in a tweet criticising the decision.

The Somali government could not immediately be reached for comment early on Saturday to Friday’s decision to withdraw almost all the roughly 700 U.S. troops by Jan. 15.

Somalia’s fragile internationally backed government is due to hold parliamentary elections this month and national elections in early February, a precursor to the planned drawdown of the 17,000-strong African Union peacekeeping force.

U.S. troops have been in Somalia, mostly supporting Somali special forces known as Danab in operations against al Shabaab, whose attacks in nations like Kenya and Uganda have killed hundreds of civilians, including Americans.

Somali forces

Danab punches above its weight because regular forces are often poorly trained and equipped, frequently desert their posts or become enmeshed in power struggles between the national and regional governments.

If the withdrawal is permanent, “it will have a huge toll on counterterrorism efforts,” said Colonel Ahmed Abdullahi Sheikh, who served for three years until 2019 as the Danab commander.

He fought alongside U.S. forces, he said, and during his command two Americans and more than a hundred of his own men had died. Both U.S. and Somali forces opposed the withdrawal, he said.

The U.S. program to expand Danab to 3,000 men was supposed to continue until 2027, Sheikh said, ’’but its future is unclear’’.

Airstrikes will likely continue from bases in Kenya and Djibouti, which could also provide a launchpad for cross-border operations. Rights group Amnesty International says the airstrikes have killed at least 16 civilians in the past three years.

The U.S. withdrawal comes at a turbulent time in the region. Ethiopia, which is a major troop contributor to the peacekeeping forces and has thousands more troops in Somalia bilaterally, is distracted by an internal conflict that broke out last month. It has disarmed hundreds of its peacekeepers already.

Somalia has been riven by civil war since 1991, but the entry of the peacekeeping force in 2008 helped incubate fledgling government structures that allowed for gradual reforms of the military, such as a biometric system to pay soldiers and the formation of Danab.

But many problems with the Somali military remain, including corruption and political interference. ’’Perhaps a withdrawal will force Somalia to confront them’’, said Sheikh. ’’Or perhaps it will make them worse.’’

Nigeria restates commitment to Industrial Revolution Plan

0

The Nigerian government has reiterated its commitment to achieve the Nigerian Industrial Revolution Plan (NIRP) to take the nation’s economy to enviable heights.

President Muhammadu Buhari made the commitment as he declared open the 34th Lagos International trade fair in Lagos, South-West Nigeria.

The President, represented by the Minister for Industry, Trade and Investment, Mr Niyi Adebayo, said the COVID-19 pandemic has posed more challenges, which has made it imperative to fast track the development of the industrial sector.

He said the country was also working to maximize the benefits of its trade relations with other countries to ensure that they uplift Nigeria’s economic plans.

For his part, the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who was represented by his Deputy, Dr Obafemi Hamzat, said the State was working with the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry to align policies that would stand the test of time and strengthen businesses, especially as the COVID-19 pandemic persists.

Dr. Hamzat said there was also the need for small and big businesses to connect to stay afloat to overcome the challenges posed by the coronavirus pandemic.

The 10-day Lagos International Trade fair with the theme “Connecting business: creating value” will close on the 13th of December.

Post EndSARS: Nigerian government pledges reforms, pleads for citizens’ support

The Nigerian government has appealed to citizens to continue to support the Police Force in order to secure lives and property across the country, while the government focuses on a critical reform of the force.

This was disclosed by the country’s Minister of Information and Culture,  Alhaji Lai Mohammed when he met with senior title editors on Friday in Lagos, South-West Nigeria.

The Minister who made the appealed stated that failure to continue to support officers of the Nigeria Police Force will continue to hunt every citizen.

His address which was in the context of the EndSARS protests observed that without the Police in-country, nobody is safe.

“Wittingly or unwittingly, we have succeeded in scaring policemen off their beats. Today, many of them are even afraid to wear their uniform. And the result has not been pleasant, in terms of security of life and property.

“We all owe it a duty to empathize with and appreciate our security agents and should resist the temptation to tar all of them with the same brush. No life is more important than the other, and respect for human rights should not be selective.

“I want to commend the state governments that have taken bold steps to shore up the morale of the police. While at it, I want to remind all of us of the saying that a society that makes war against its police had better learnt to make friends with its criminals.”

As part of the process to review the aftermath of the EndSARS protests with a view to finding solutions that work for all, the Minister said the government, has started a review of the whole EndSARS crisis.

“As you are aware, and in accordance with the directive of Mr President, Ministers have since gone back to their respective states to meet with stakeholders in the wake of the protest and its aftermath.

This is in addition to what we are doing in meeting the media stakeholders. A Federal Government delegation has also visited the various zones to consult with stakeholders. The outcome of these consultations will feed into an overall review of the whole crisis by the Federal Government.”

Mohammed decried the media coverage of the violence, especially where the security agencies were hit.

“While everyone was fixated on the fake massacre at Lekki Toll Gate, few paid attention to the way and manner policemen and soldiers were killed. In particular, policemen were hacked down in the most gruesome manner that calls into question the sanity of their killers. Yet, these security agents were treated as sub-humans.

Human rights organizations all but ignored the fact that six soldiers and 37 policemen were killed, some of them dismembered and cannibalized. The media report of the killings was perfunctory, at best.

Remember, gentlemen, that in addition to the killing of security agents, eight medium-security custodial centres in six states (Edo, Lagos, Abia, Delta, Ondo and Ebonyi) were attacked, with 1,957 inmates, most of them dangerous criminals, set free.

Add that to the fact that over 100 AK-47 rifles were stolen by hoodlums as they burnt police station after police station, and you will understand the gravity of the situation. The spectre of hoodlums, armed with AK-47, roaming the streets and our roads, will send jitters down the spine.”

Role of Social Media

The Minister said Social media was used for mobilization, and it was also used to guide arsonists and looters to properties, both public and private, which were targeted for attack.

He said the role of social media development has strengthened the government’s resolve to work with stakeholders to stop the abuse of social media.

It has also rekindled the debate on the need to regulate social media content, a debate that is not limited to Nigeria. Former US President Barack Obama has said the internet and social media have helped to create the ”single biggest threat” to democracy.

Facebook Founder Mark Zuckerberg has called for more regulation of social media content. Other giant tech companies seem to agree. On our part, we will not sit down and allow a reckless use of social media to aggravate our fault lines and throw the country into turmoil.”

The Minister promised however that in curbing the excesses of social media, the Nigerian government will neither shut down the internet nor stifle press freedom or free speech, as some have insinuated. The Government acknowledge that social media is here to stay.

President Buhari to commission Lagos-Ibadan railway next month

0

Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari is set to commission the newly constructed Lagos-Ibadan rail line by January 2021.

Minister of Transportation, Rotimi  Amaechi, disclosed this in Abuja during the inauguration of recently elected members of the Chartered Institute of Transport Administration of Nigeria (CIoTA).

Amaechi said President Buhari was a committed reformer determined to change the face of transportation in the country.

CIoTA President, Dr Bashir Jamoh, while welcoming the minister, disclosed that the transport sector was moving into a new era of professionalism that was set to usher in excellence across the various modes.

Amaechi said the rail project had been delivered, but its usage would commence before the official commissioning. He also disclosed that he had approved the fares for the route.

According to him, “I just got the mandate from President Buhari that he would commission the Lagos-Ibadan railway in January 2021. However, they should have been operating even before that time.

“I also have approved the cost of transportation by rail from Lagos to Ibadan. We just transferred the cost just like  that of Kaduna, which we think is quite fair.”

The Transport Minister stated that the Buhari administration was committed to reviving and improving the entire transport infrastructure in the country. He stressed that there were already many visible changes, especially in the aviation and maritime subsectors of the transportation industry.

Mr Amaechi stated, “In the transport sector under this government, a lot is going on, like working to complete the terminals under aviation. I am sure you would have seen changes at the Port Harcourt airport and Abuja.

I am sure the Minister of Aviation will tell us very soon when the airport in Kano and the one in Lagos would be completed.”

While commending the activities of CIoTA under the leadership of. Bashir Jamoh, Amaechi noted that the Federal Ministry of Transportation would partner with the Institute to encourage professionalism in the transport sector as well as ensure seamless and effective transportation across all modes.

Earlier, Jamoh, who is also Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), lauded the effort of the Federal Government to upgrade the transport infrastructure. He said CIoTA was promoting professionalism and training to aid the government with the right manpower to man the transport infrastructure.

The CIoTA President stated, “Nigeria has made a significant investment in transportation.

“The journey for the Institute has begun. We are building on broad policies anchored on a tripod of professionalism; education, research and development; and advocacy.”

To ensure professionalism, Jamoh said CIoTA was working hard to empower members with the required skills, knowledge and expertise to man the country’s transportation infrastructure.

The Institute is also working with universities and other tertiary institutions to try to build professionalism in the transport sector from the undergraduate level, he said, adding that committees have been set up to follow up on policy recommendations from CIoTA to ensure their implementation.
