Joe Biden to be sworn in as 46th President of the United States

0

US President-elect, Joe Biden is to be sworn in as the 46th president of the United States at a moment of profound turmoil and loss for America.

Biden will be sworn in shortly before noon on Wednesday by Chief Justice John Roberts on the Capitol’s West Front, with a vista of iconic national monuments stretching across the National Mall.

Instead of a vast throng of supporters, Biden will look out upon a field of flags from each of the 50 US states and territories representing those who could not attend because of the pandemic.

Biden will take the oath of office on the steps of the US Capitol where exactly two weeks prior a mob of Donald Trump supporters, who is preparing to leave the White House, breached security barriers and stormed the building in an effort to overturn the results of the presidential election.

In the aftermath of the deadly assault on the Capitol and as the death toll from the coronavirus surpasses 400,000, Biden will assume the presidency in a city resembling a war zone and devoid of the celebratory pomp and pageantry that comes with a presidential inauguration.

Even before the attack on the Capitol, the inaugural planning committee urged Americans to stay home in an effort to minimize the risk of further spreading the disease.

After refusing to concede, Trump will hold a farewell event at Joint Base Andrews outside Washington on Wednesday morning.

When Biden takes office, Trump will be nearly 1,000 miles away, at his south Florida resort, Mar-a-Lago.

Trump, who was impeached for a second time on a charge of “incitement of insurrection” after the deadly siege of the Capitol, leaves Washington for an uncertain future.

Whether he mounts a political comeback in 2024 probably depends on the outcome of his Senate impeachment trial, which will forge ahead in the first days of his post-presidency.

If convicted, the Senate can vote to disqualify him from ever again holding future office.

Trump’s absence at the ceremony will be a final show of disregard for democratic norms and traditions.

Only four US presidents have skipped their predecessor’s inauguration – most recently Andrew Johnson in 1869.

Mike Pence, the outgoing vice-president, will attend the ceremony to demonstrate support for a peaceful transition of power.

The Clintons, Bushes and Obamas are all expected to attend the ceremony.

Biden will take the oath alongside Kamala Harris, who will make history as the nation’s first female, first Black and first Asian American vice-president.

She will be sworn in by Justice Sonia Sotomayor, the first Hispanic and Latina member of the supreme court.

Some elements will remain unchanged. Biden is expected to deliver an inaugural address, in which he will appeal for national unity.

After his remarks, Biden will continue the tradition of reviewing the troops.

But Biden will forgo the traditional parade down Pennsylvania Avenue. Instead, the inaugural committee has planned a virtual “Parade Across America” that will begin after his swearing-in.

On the eve of his inauguration, Biden led a remembrance ceremony at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool honoring the 400,000 people who died from the coronavirus pandemic.

Confronting the virus will be Biden’s most urgent priority after he is sworn in.

More covid 19 cases linked to arrivals for Australian Open

0

Ten people who have flown to Melbourne for the Australian Open have tested positive to coronavirus, authorities said.

Lisa Neville, police minister for the Australian state of Victoria, reported three new cases on Wednesday, adding one of the cases was a player who has been in “hard lockdown” since arrival into Australia as he came in on a flight where positive cases had been recorded.

The second case related to another player and the third is a support person with the player, she added.

She said: “In the meantime, the player, the support person and their bubble – so the other support person and player they’re with – will not be training until we have a final confirmation either that they are shedding or that they are positive.

“If they are positive, those two [the player and support person] will go into the health hotel and their bubble will be considered close contacts and will be in lockdown for the 14 days.”

Tennis Australia chief executive Craig Tiley said the safety of the Victorian community will not be compromised, but added the body was walking a “tightrope”.

He told ABC News Breakfast: “I do understand the players, this is a new experience for them and I don’t think anyone expected to know what the 14 days was like and they are adapting to it.

“At the beginning, it was pretty challenging with their adaptation, it’s got a lot better, I think the majority of the players understand and accept it and there is a minority struggling with it but we are going to do whatever we can to make it better for them.”

Yulia Putintseva of Kazakhstan has been one of the most outspoken complainants and she posted a picture of herself on Instagram holding up a sign reading: “We need fresh air to breathe.”

The critics have received the most publicity but there are plenty of players who have accepted the restrictions without complaint and appreciate how their situation looks to Melburnians, who endured the strictest lockdown in the world to reduce community cases to zero.

Two-time former Australian Open champion Victoria Azarenka wrote in a long Twitter post addressing her fellow players: “This has been a very difficult time for a lot of us that did not expect to end up in the situation we are in today, myself included.

“To be in a 14 day hard quarantine is very tough to accept in terms of all the work that everyone has been putting in during their off-season – to be prepared for playing our first grand slam of the year.

“I understand all the frustration and feeling of unfairness that has been coming and it is overwhelming.

“We have a global pandemic, nobody has a clear playbook of how to operate at full capacity and without a glitch, we all have seen it last year. Sometimes things happen and we need to accept, adapt and keep moving!”

Ndidi’s Goal Sends Leicester Top of EPL

0

Leicester City moved to the top of the Premier League table and increased the pressure on struggling Chelsea manager Frank Lampard with an impressive victory at The King Power Stadium, BSNsports.com.ng reports.

The Foxes knew a win would see them overhaul Manchester United and they were on their way after only six minutes when Wilfred Ndidi fired in off the inside of the post from 20 yards.

Chelsea rarely threatened, although they were denied a first-half penalty by VAR when Christian Pulisic went down under a challenge from Jonny Evans, only for the technology to confirm the offence took place just outside the area.

Lampard’s misery was swiftly reinforced as Leicester City broke clear to add a second four minutes before the break, James Maddison sweeping a cool finish past Chelsea keeper Edouard Mendy on the half-volley from Marc Albrighton’s pass.

Chelsea barely raised a gallop after the break and it was Leicester who created the better openings as James Justin headed wide when unmarked and Mendy saved from Youri Tielemans.

Leicester are now a point ahead of Manchester United having played a game more while Chelsea are in eighth, five points off the Champions League places.

In the first game of the day, goals from Jarrod Bowen and Michail Antonio secured a 2-1 win for West Ham against West Brom.

West Ham took the lead on the stroke of half-time when Bowen chested in Vladimir Coufal’s cross.

The visitors levelled soon after the restart through Matheus Pereira’s thunderous drive from distance.

Dara O’Shea then blocked Manuel Lanzini’s goal bound shot but Antonio gave West Ham the win with a hooked finish.

The win was West Ham’s third in a row in the League while West Brom remains 19th, five points from safety.

Poultry farmers lament high cost of maize

0

Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN) in South West have lamented the high cost of maize saying serious hunger may hit the country, if nothing is done within a stipulated period of time.

General Secretary, Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN), Olalekan Odunsi, with Chairmen across the six states of the southwest: Godwin Egbebe (Lagos),Bisi Babalola (Ekiti), Hemi Olukiran (Osun), Damian Ogunbo, (Ondo), Blessing Alawode (Ogun), Gbemisoye Agboola (Oyo) and Ojo Akinwunmi (Kwara) addressed the press in Ibadan on Tuesday.

The association said many of its members have been indebted while many have closed down their businesses as a result of the high cost of feeds.

At a press conference held at NUJ,Iyaganku, Odunsi said “the Poultry industry in the South West geopolitical zone is over 6 decades growing consistently and steadily to a population of 30 million, a number representing more than 60% of the National Poultry Population.

“In investment, this sector is worth over N2 Trillion Naira. In job creation, it employs over 10 million people directly and indirectly using its wide value chain from farm to field. It is worthy of note that this sector is almost 100% private driven.

“However, if urgent attention is not given to the lingering crisis of grains especially maize and Soya, we fear that an industry with such an enviable statistics may suffer a total collapse.

“About July, 2020, the price of maize due to inadequate supply against the huge demand by Poultry Sector and other users, rose from a price of 105000 – 165000. In the midst of this hike in price, the Central Bank of Nigeria announced a ban on Forex for the importation of maize which further drove the price to as high as 185000/TON.

Presently, egg is going out of the reach of an average family with ideal price at N1300 per crate but the farm gate price is still at N1000-N1100 a price that will force farmers to close down.

The government should approve urgent importation of Animal Feed Grade of Maize to Sustain the over 50million layers, 100million broilers, 1million breeders, and other classes of poultry until the next harvest season.

In the interim, Odunsi urged the government to enforce a ban on export of Soya beans both seed and the processed meal. Principal among the reasons for the ban was to encourage local production.

‘Yet the acute scarcity and astronomical prices of soya beans and maize threaten an additional five million poultry jobs in the short term except Your Excellency intervenes.

The sectary general who lamented shortfall in rainfall, illegal export activities, herdsmen and insecurity challenges as factors affecting farming in the region however called on Governors in the Southwest,  need to put as much efforts to cultivation of maize as they have done with rice.

Odunsi said; “There should be strong collaboration between Maize Farmers Association of Nigeria, Soya Farmers Association of Nigeria and PAN to determine the body’s actual yearly need and assessing the later Yield Vis-a-Vis her need for proper planning. To save the current 10million jobs in the Poultry Value Chain of the Nigerian Economy, the governors need to act now.”

Trump, in farewell message hails his ‘America First’ platform

0

US President Donald Trump has released a farewell video, hyping what he described as the success of his “America First” platform and telling his supporters that “the movement we started is only just beginning”.

Trump, who will leave office on Wednesday but will not attend the inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden, acknowledged in the nearly 20-minute video that a new administration would be sworn in this week.

“We extend our best wishes,” he said. “And we also want them to have luck. A very important word.

“Now, as we prepare to hand power over to a new administration at noon on Wednesday, I want you to know that the movement we started is only just beginning,” he said.

Trump, who has maintained that November’s presidential election was “stolen” from him amid widespread voter fraud, described himself on Tuesday as “the only true outsider ever to win the presidency”.

He only acknowledged he would not serve a second term as president on January 7, a day after his supporters stormed the US Capitol as Congress met to certify Biden’s victory. The incident left five dead.

Trump has still not explicitly acknowledged that he lost to Biden.

In the video released on Tuesday, Trump condemned the violence on Capitol Hill, saying “all Americans were horrified by the assault on our Capitol”.

“Political violence is an attack on everything we cherish as Americans. It can never be tolerated.”

Last week, the US House of Representatives voted to impeach Trump for “incitement to insurrection” in relation to the riot.

Trump will face a trial in the Senate on the article of impeachment, which will require a two-thirds majority for conviction in the chamber, which is split 50-50 between Democrats and Republicans.

A guilty vote could also lead to Trump being barred from holding future federal office.

On Tuesday, Trump also thanked his family, his cabinet and Vice President Mike Pence, whom he had specifically pressured in his attempts to overturn the election results.

Trump’s address served as a bookend to his inaugural speech in 2017, where he laid out his vision of leadership based on the concept of “America First”.

Trump also hailed the pre-pandemic US economy and the rate of development of a COVID-19 vaccine under his administration’s Operation Warp Speed, as well as his crackdown on undocumented immigrants and normalisation deals between Israel and Arab states.

Trump is the first president in more than 150 years who will not attend his successor’s inauguration.

Algeria reports 249 new COVID-19 cases

Libya urges joint international efforts against illegal immigration

0

Al-Mabrouk Abdulhafith, head of the Libyan Anti-Illegal Immigration Department, has called for joint international efforts to resolve the issue of illegal immigration.

Abdulhafith made his remarks during a meeting with German Ambassador to Libya Oliver Owcza, according to a statement issued by the Libyan Interior Department.

“Abdulhafith explained that organizations concerned with (illegal) immigration operate outside of Libya under the pretext that Libya is classified unsafe, which is a complete contradiction as they propose to the Libyan authorities to integrate immigrants into the Libyan state,” the statement said.

Abdulhafith also stressed the need to create sources of income in the immigrants’ countries of origin, especially Libya’s neighbouring countries, in order to reduce the number of illegal immigrants crossing through Libya.

He added that it requires joint international efforts “to reach urgent solutions that do not affect the sovereignty of the Libyan state and refuse to settle immigrants (in Libya) in any way.”

Thousands of illegal immigrants, mostly Africans, choose to cross the Mediterranean from Libya toward Europe, due to the state of insecurity and chaos in the North African nation following the fall of former leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011.

Immigrant shelters in Libya are crowded with immigrants either rescued from the sea or arrested by the Libyan security forces, despite international calls to close those centers.

French Series ‘Lupin’ Tops ‘Queen’s Gambit’ Views On Netflix

The Netflix-produced TV series “Lupin” will have been watched in 70 million households within its first month, setting a record for a French TV show, the streaming platform forecast on Tuesday.

Based on the basis of current trends the series — starring Omar Sy of “Untouchable” fame — will have breezed past Netflix’s biggest recent blockbuster “The Queen’s Gambit” which has 62 million views and other English-language hits including “Bridgerton”.

The Netflix projection covers the 28 days to February 5, the company told AFP.

“70 million, that’s crazy”, Omar Sy tweeted. “So proud that Lupin is the first French series to have such an international success.”

Only half of the first season’s 10 episodes have so far been available on Netflix.

They are top of the viewing charts in around 10 countries, including Brazil, Vietnam, Argentina, and Spain.

The 1905 book on which the series is loosely based, “Arsene Lupin — Gentleman Burglar” by French novelist Maurice Leblanc — has shot to the top of book sales on Amazon.fr since the release of the TV show.

In the series, based in modern-day Paris, Sy plays Assane Diop who uses the gentleman thief and master of disguise as his inspiration in his quest to avenge his father for an injustice inflicted by a wealthy family.

The series, produced by Gaumont, was mostly written by Briton George Kay, whose past work includes “Killing Eve”, “Criminal” and “The Hour”.

It has a 7.4 out of 10 rating, according to a review compilation by the Internet Movie Database.
