Hundreds of people rally against Somalian President Farmaajo

0

Hundreds of people marched through Somalia’s capital Mogadishu to denounce President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed, also known as Farmaajo.

They accuse him of delaying the country’s legislative elections to aid his re-election bid in 2021.

There were reports of clashes between gunmen protecting the protestors and security forces.

“Disagreements over the composition of the electoral board prevented the vote from taking place this month”.

The development came as Somalia severed ties with southern neighbour Kenya on Tuesday.

Chinese doctors treat over 2,000 people in South Sudan

0

Chinese medical doctors have offered free treatment to more than 2,000 people residing along the 392 km Juba-Terekeka-Yirol-Rumbek road in South Sudan.

The first-ever longest road in the youngest nation is under construction by Shandong Hi-Speed Group Company Ltd (SDHS).

Hua Ning, Chinese Ambassador to South Sudan, applauded the eighth batch of the medical team from China’s Anhui Province for their unwavering dedication to help poor communities in South Sudan.

“This eighth batch of Chinese medical team sent from Anhui province over the years have been very active in conducting medical treatment for the local people in South Sudan. They are always thinking about people who live far away and people who have very little access to medical services,” Hua told journalists during the medical outreach at Nyuwa health center in Jebel Lado located on the outskirts of the capital, Juba.

Charles Andrea Jada, executive director of Ladu Payam in Central Equatoria state, thanked the Chinese medical team for supporting the poor people with treatment.

The medical outreach has collaborated together with SDHS in efforts to support local communities residing along the road.

The Juba-Terekeka-Yirol-Rumbek road connects about seven states including Central Equatoria, Lakes, Unity, Western Bahr El Ghazal, Northern Bahr El Ghazal and Warrap states and it also links to the contested Abyei Administrative Area with neighboring Sudan.

SDHS has already completed the first section of the highway from Juba to Terekeka.

This came in the aftermath of the recently signed agreement between the Chinese government in Juba and South Sudan’s ministry of health that will see Beijing continue to send medical teams from Anhui Province to the youngest nation starting 2021 to 2026.

Meanwhile, the Chinese medical team since its arrival in August has been training South Sudanese doctors, in addition to sharing knowledge on COVID-19 and other diseases at the main referral hospital Juba Teaching Hospital.

The medical team consisting of experts in laboratory technology, infection, insensitive care, public health, and nursing have also donated medical equipment to the Juba Teaching Hospital to help in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

EndSARS: Ignore sensationalism by Amnesty International – BMO

0

The Buhari Media Organisation (BMO) has called on Nigerians to ignore any form of sensationalism that the Amnesty International investigative panel on Endsars will cause.

At a news briefing in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, the Chairman of the BMO, Mr Niyi Akinsiju alleged that Amnesty International and the anti-corruption body, Transparency International are trying to set up parallel investigative panels to discredit the judicial panels on police brutality earlier constituted by the government.

He said this parallel panel was not necessary and that it would unsettle the polity unnecessarily.

“These local collaborators, operating under the guise of Coalition for Survival of Covid-19 and led by a prominent human rights lawyer, are bent on discrediting the judicial panel investigating the alleged Lekki shootings and the defunct SARS’ alleged brutalities.

“On the surface, this Covid-19 coalition is supposedly on a mission to enrich ongoing investigations into ‘age-long abuses suffered by Nigerians in the hand of members of the defunct Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS)’ in as many as 30 States and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) where panels have been set up, but there is more to it than meets the eye.

“These individuals who should have used the open platform of the judicial panel in Lagos to prove their claim of a massacre at the Lekki toll gate on October 20 are now colluding with Amnesty International which is still struggling to manufacture evidence of its allegations of a massacre that night by soldiers.

“We have reasons to believe that this investigative panel which they intend to run parallel with the States’ Judicial Panel, is nothing short of a charade paid for by Amnesty International and Transparency Initiative to smear the image of the Nigerian Army with contrived testimonies.

“A substantial fund running into US$750,000 (N360,000 000) has been provided and paid into an account outside the country. The information at our disposal is that the organisers are still expecting more funds for the hatchet job they have signed up for.

“Their modus operandi will include using people who will be identified as military men, with their faces masked, to present damaging ‘testimonies’ against the Army authorities,” he said.

Mr Akinsiju advised the coalition of the international bodies to rather focus on helping Nigerians overcome the challenges brought on by COVID-19 and ensure that equity is served in the already existing investigative panels.

Egypt condemns new Israeli settlement construction plan in Jerusalem

0

Egypt has condemned the Israeli announcement of establishing about 8,300 new settlement units in Jerusalem.

In a statement, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry said the plan constitutes a new violation of international legitimacy and the relevant UN Security Council resolutions.

The Israeli authorities have approved the building of thousands of new settlement units on the Palestinian land extending from Beit Safafa neighbourhood to al-Walaja village, south of Jerusalem, Paleatine’s official WAFA news agency reported earlier in the day.

This settlement construction, which involves building towers up to 30 floors high, is scheduled to begin by 2021, and will continue until 2040, said WAFA.

The Palestinians want the eastern part of Jerusalem, which was occupied by Israel in 1967, to be the capital of their future independent state, while the Israelis insist that Jerusalem is their undivided eternal capital.

London’s theatres forced to close their doors again

0

London’s theatres will shut again on Wednesday as the British capital moves into the toughest level of coronavirus restrictions, with some forced to close Christmas shows just days after they opened, in a hammer blow for the industry.

The government on Monday announced that the rate of coronavirus infections was rising exponentially in London and all hospitality and indoor entertainment would close, giving the industry two days notice.

“It’s a huge blow for the casts, for the crews, for the creative teams. You know, a huge amount of money has been invested in getting these Christmas shows up and running, and now they have to close,” said Julian Bird, chief executive of the Society of London Theatre.

About 30 theatres are open in London, he said, ranging in size from small pub theatres to massive auditoriums.

After an extremely difficult year many theatres had adapted their premises and shows to be COVID safe with reduced capacity, socially distanced seating, and temperature checks at the door. Audiences felt safe, he said.

Louis Hartshorn, chief executive officer of Hartshorn-Hook Productions said: “It’s a hammer blow to an industry that’s already on its knees … we have managed to put together a production expecting that there might be some twists in the road. But actually, we’re getting to the point where the reserves are exhausted.”

His company’s production of The Great Gatsby reopened in October, but now faces its second shut down in two months.

Theatres all over Britain felt the same, he said.

London’s theatre scene is slightly bigger than Broadway in New York, with just over 15 million attendances in 2019, according to the Society of London Theatre’s box office data.

The city’s theatres saw revenue of nearly 800 million pounds last year, with the average ticket costing around 50 pounds.

Out in London’s West End theatre district on Tuesday for their likely last chance of seeing a show this year, Lisa and Carly Sandom from Essex said they were dismayed.

“This is completely depressing. (I am) gutted for all the people that work for the theatres and the production. It’s awful,” said Carly Sandom.

Jennifer Webb, also in London to see a show, said she couldn’t understand why theatres must close but shops, packed with Christmas shoppers, could remain open.

“Really the shops … should be the places that are closed and the theatres, that are managing everything beautifully to get audiences in … should be the places that are open.”

COVID-19: Kano State government orders closure of schools

0

Governor of Kano Dr Umar Ganduje has ordered the closure of all public and private Primary and Secondary Schools in the state with immediate effect.

The decision comes on the heels of the conscious attempt by the State government to prevent wards from contracting and spreading the COVID-19 pandemic as positive cases continue to rise in the country.

In a statement signed by the state Commissioner for Education, Muhammad Sanusi Kiru, the governor said, “Parents whose children are in boarding schools are to also arrange and convey their children/ wards back home from tomorrow, Wednesday, 16th December 2020.”

Dr Mariya Mahamoud Bunkure, the State Commissioner for Higher Education said the Governor has also approved the closure of all Tertiary Institutions in the State with immediate effect.

Similarly, the State Commissioner for Health, Dr Aminu Ibrahim Tsanyawa said the Governor has directed the closure of all Public and Private Health Training institutions including Schools of basic/post-basic nursing and midwifery, Schools of Health Technology and school of Hygiene with immediate effect.

The Governor said he regrets any inconveniences caused by the sudden closure while Students have been advised to continue with revision of their school works while at home.

It would be recalled that Kaduna, Katsina and Jigawa State governments have also ordered the closure of schools in their states.
