Lucien Favre has been sacked by Borussia Dortmund .

This is coming after a run of poor form that has seen them manage just one win in 5 games across all competition.

Borussia Dortmund were well beaten at home yesterday 5-1 by newly promoted side VFB Stuttgart and as a result they’re now 5 points behind leaders, Bayern Munich. Although they’ve qualified for the Uefa Champions League round of 16, but the inconsistency in results have led to the decision.

The statement released by the club this afternoon reads:

“Borussia Dortmund have parted ways with head coach Lucien Favre.

“The club would like to thank Lucien for his dedication and wish him success in his future.”

Group Rejects Senate Hearing to Merge Parallel Medical Bodies

The National Complementary and Alternative Medical Association (NACAMA) has rejected moves by the Senate to merge it with traditional medicine practitioners.

The Senate Committee on Health is billed to hold a public hearing today in respect of a Bill for the Establishment of Federal College of Traditional, Complementary and Alternative Medicine of Nigeria, which will see traditional medical practitioners merging with NACAMA.

The National President of NACAMA, Professor Peter Emeka Katchy, who spoke to reporters yesterday, said their objection stemmed from the association’s initial opposition against lumping traditional medicine practitioners and Complementary and Alternative Medical Council together.

According to him, “We are vehemently opposed to the traditional medicine being merged with NACAMA. Traditional medicine is of parallel relationship with complementary and alternative medical practice. Both of them are of different content and practice, and should, therefore, not be collapsed into one.

“Traditional medicine involves healthcare delivery methods and practices that are directly traceable or related to culture and ancestral heritage of the people.

“Alternative medicine, on the other hand, refers to the practice of different approaches to management of ailments not typically used in allopathic practice-conventional orthodox medicine.

“Complementary and alternative medical practice are of seamless compatibility mode, and their general efficacy has led to their more frequent combination with conventional medicine.”

Katchy said complementary and alternative medicine was given a statutory flavour in Nigeria upon being incorporated into the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria by Decree 78 of 1992.

He wondered how public hearing is being held with respect to an issue in which his association is deeply involved, and yet it was not invited.

The draw for the last 32 of the Europa League will take place on today with Nigerian players set to know their club’s opponents BSNsports.com.ng reports.

Samuel Chukwueze, Peter Olayinka, Wilfred Ndidi, Leon Balogun, Joe Aribo, Kelechi Iheanacho, Victor Osimhen are some of the big names in Nigeria Football left in the tournament.

Premier League teams Arsenal, Leicester City and Tottenham Hotspur, all came through their groups, with Manchester United entering the competition after dropping down from the Champions League.

The Europa League last 32 draw takes place at 12:00 on today in Nyon, with the two legs fixtures to take place on 18 and 25 February.

Arsenal, Leicester, Rangers and Tottenham, Villarreal, Roma, Milan, Napoli all won their groups, while Manchester United earned more points than any other side to finish third in a Champions League group.

Annah Daniel emerges as Chairperson NAWOJ FCT

The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), FCT Chapter has elected Comrade Annah Iyana Daniel of the Federal Ministry of Information Chapel as chairperson to pilot its affairs for the next three years.

The election which held at the secretariat of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT Council, Utako was supervised by the national leadership of NAWOJ and also witnessed the election and inauguration of four other officers of the chapter.

Comrade Annah, an Assistant Chief Information Officer and Resident Information Officer (RIO) at the Federal Ministry of Information returned unopposed following the NAWOJ National Secretariat ratifying the disqualification of the incumbent chairperson, Ms Stella Okoh-Esene by the Josie Mudasiru-led Credentials Committee.

The other elected officers include the incumbent vice-chairperson, Mrs Joyce Remi Babayeju of Day Break Newspapers who polled 68 votes against 58 votes by Hajiya Aisha Ali of the National Orientation Agency (NOA).

Others are the incumbent assistant secretary, Mrs Nkiru Nnoli-Okeke of Federal Radio Cooperation of Nigeria (FRCN), who polled 74 votes against 52 votes by Ekwi Ajide of Anambra Broadcasting Cooperation (ABC), to be elected as secretary.

The incumbent internal auditor, Glory Josiah of HardTalk Magazine returned unopposed as Assistant Assistant Secretary just as Mrs Remi Johnson of FRCN also returned unopposed as Financial Secretary.

Announcing the results at the end of the election which was conducted in a peaceful and orderly manner, the secretary of the committee, Ms Ruth Tene of Thisday Nigeria Newspapers commended members for their orderly conduct and noted that the committee discharged its duties in accordance with the constitution of the NUJ even as all resolutions reached were endorsed by the NAWOJ National Secretariat and duly communicated to the committee.

In inaugurating the new executive, the NAWOJ National Vice President, Zone D, Mrs Jamila Abubakar tasked them to always uphold the constitution of the NUJ and do right by all.

She urged them to carry all members along in the spirit of sisterhood which the association champions, noting that there are no losers in NAWOJ as it is one big family.

In her acceptance speech, the chairperson appreciated the national leadership of NAWOJ, NUJ FCT Council and the leadership of all NUJ chapels in the FCT for their support to the chapter during the processes of the election.

“Most importantly, I wish to appreciate all NAWOJIANS, because this is all about you. NAWOJ is one big family irrespective of our political inclinations. It is time to close our ranks, come together, work as a team, and forge ahead.

“The elections are over and we are all winners. I wish to state emphatically that I do not have enemies or rivals, I am only here to serve my fellow women journalists in every way possible and I need the support of all members of NAWOJ to succeed.”

Speaking further, she commended NAWOJians for coming out en-mass to exercise their franchise especially for identifying with her campaign theme of repositioning the association. Pointing out that with their support the executives can achieve all its campaign promises and much more.

“There is a lot of work to be done and I believe by God’s grace we shall triumph. I count it a privilege to work with you my sisters of vision and mission. Our target for NAWOJ FCT is a quality representation, training, mentorship, advocacy, empowerment and support. Thus we must hit the ground running. We must make NAWOJ FCT great again. 

“We count on the support of our national leaders, the leaders of  NUJ FCT Council and all chapels. There is no doubt that women journalists face a lot of challenges including harassment, intimidation and victimisation among others in the course of carrying out their duties.

“We promise to ensure that women journalists are equipped to cope effectively and even surmount these challenges. We must confront and address these issues. Nothing is impossible if we put our hearts to it.”

Post COVID-19: Association to revive reading culture, ensure safety measures

The Nigerian Library Association, NLA, Oyo State Chapter, has vowed to revive the reading culture and at the same time ensure COVID-19 measures are sustained especially among the youths in the State.

The Oyo State Chairman of the NLA, Mr Adekoya Osunkoya gave the assurance while addressing journalists ahead of the 2020 National Library Week, Conference and Annual General Meeting.

The event with the theme: “Library and Information Services During and After COVID-19 Pandemic,” was held at the National Library of Nigeria, Iyaganku, Ibadan, the State capital.

Osunkoya noted that the press conference aimed at creating awareness for the association and librarianship profession, affirming that the theme of the 2020 National Library week was picked because the COVID-19 pandemic is dramatically impacting livelihoods, particularly because 70 per cent of people in Africa especially in Nigeria, are working in the informal sector.

“With a slow-down in economic growth related to COVID-19, librarians are encouraging a context-specific, risk-based approach with adjustments to facilitate physical distancing, improve access to handwashing facilities, strengthen hygiene practices, and promote the use of masks over the mouth and nose in the library.”

The NLA Chairman stated that the Association among other things provides support in the development and maintenance of standard for education and certification of librarians, archivists, and information scientists, as well as pursuing the establishment and implementation of standard policies for libraries in Nigeria.

He said, “The Nigerian Library Association is a professional body of librarians, archivists and information scientists in Oyo State and Nigeria at large.

It is an association that aims at pursuing the establishment and development of libraries, information and resource centres, especially in public, community and school environments.”

He maintained that librarians were part of a door-to-door campaign and sharing information on COVID-19, adding that such activities help people to understand how they can better protect themselves and others, as well as combating misinformation around the pandemic.

Osunkoya, however, solicited the assistance of the Oyo State government to the association considering its meaningful contributions to the State and the society at large.

“We implore our amiable Governor, His Excellency, Engr Seyi Makinde to come to our aid in these aspects. We need his help in the allocation of a piece of land and bus. We can be supported with donations of physical facilities like buildings, and donation of a bus to ease our movement around the State,” he appealed.

Osunkoya further commented on the activities of the association, highlighting some of its accomplishments in the past years as follows:

Organising seminars and conferences for members to broaden their knowledge and to keep them abreast of current information in the profession.

Webinar conference organised for members in September 2020 on how to effectively render library services during and after COVID-19 Pandemic.

Giving awards to deserving members. Giving members useful and timely information. Enlightening clientele on how to protect themselves during this trying period.

Rendering services to clientele, without necessarily going to the library, with the aid of social media.

Champions League Draw: Top European Clubs to know opponents today

Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City will find out their Champions League last-16 opponents in today’s Uefa Champions League draw

The trio won their respective groups to progress, with Manchester United the only Premier League side to exit.

Holders, Bayern Munich and the three English teams are among the seeded clubs, meaning five-time champions, Barcelona and La Liga leaders, Atletico Madrid are two potential opponents.

The draw for the Uefa Champions League takes place today, 14 December at 11:00 GMT. It will be held at Uefa’s headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland.

The sixteen teams will be put into two pots – one for the seeded teams, who are the eight group winners, and one for the unseeded teams, who are the eight runners up.

Teams from the same national association cannot be drawn against each other. That means Real Madrid cannot meet Barcelona or city rivals Atletico until the quarter-finals.

Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City are all seeded after winning their groups so that means they will avoid tough ties against Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich, Serie A winners Juventus and French giants Paris St-Germain.

Seeded: Bayern Munich, Chelsea, Borussia Dortmund, Juventus, Liverpool, Manchester City, Paris St-Germain, Real Madrid.

Unseeded: Atalanta, Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, Borussia Monchengladbach, Lazio, Porto, RB Leipzig, Sevilla.

The first legs will take place on 16, 17, 23 and 24 February, with the second legs on 9, 10, 16, 17 March.

Seeded teams will play away for the first leg before being at home for the return matches.

Nigerian Government launches two integrated farm projects in Edo

The Nigerian Government, through the Benin-Owena River Basin Development Authority (BORBDA) launched two integrated farm projects in Okpe and Uneme Nekhua both in Akoko Edo Local Government Area of Edo as part of the agricultural transformation agenda of the government on Sunday.

The integrated farm projects modelled after the Songhai farm in Porto Novo, Benin Republic, consisting of production, processing, research enterprises, integrated crops, fisheries, animal husbandry and marketing.

The Managing Director of BORBDA, Mr Saliu Ahmed, during the launching said the establishment of the farms is aimed at revamping the agricultural sector and to ensure national food security.

Ahmed said the two community would cultivate 100 hectares of farm each, adding that the integrated farm projects had following features: sales point, agro-forestry, market garden, feed mill, cassava and fruit juice processing units, abattoirs, biogas facility, a dormitory and lots more.

According to him, the farm projects would serve as a research and experimental hub for local farmers to learn new and productive methods of doing farm businesses.

“The Okpe and Uneme Nekhua integrated farms have the potentials to significantly improve the local production of cassava and several other crops, animal feed, poultry, pig, fish production in an integrated manner that ensure nothing goes to waste.

“An improvement in the productivity of the smallholder farmers will translate to improved food security and standard of living in the host communities and beyond,” he said.

The managing director noted that the farms would restore hope and confidence between the communities and indigenes thereby making the youths of the communities major players in the nation’s economy.

“These farms are to be woven around the host communities and a first step towards achieving this will be the sponsorship of select youths of the communities for immersion training in Songhai farm in Porto Novo, Benin Republic.

“These projects which are currently at the clearing stage will benefit all and even generations to come. We therefore strongly advocate for total community ownership and participation,” he said.

The facilitator of the project, Peter Akpatason, who represents Akoko Edo Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, said the projects were unique and formed part of the vision of the Federal Government to use agriculture for job creation.

Akpatason said that his decision to attract such projects was to encourage the people to take up agricultural activities to empower themselves.

“I decided to bring these projects to my constituent because it is a legacy project that would stand the test of time.”

“My advice for the people of my constituent is to make good use of the rare opportunities by embracing the project and support Benin-Owena River Basin to ensure the project is completed in due course,’’ he said.

World Arabic Day: Arabic Language can Promote Global Peace – Minister

Nigeria’s Information and Culture Minister,  Alhaji Lai Mohammed has said that the Arabic language can play a huge role in promoting and facilitate global peace and development.

The minister disclosed this on Sunday in Abuja during an Arabic language workshop organized by the Embassy of the United Arab Emirates in Abuja to commemorate the United Nation’s World Arabic Day.

The Minister described the event as very instructive, given the current global interest in the establishment of new diplomatic rapprochement between and among nations and the renewed zeal to combat violent extremism and promote pluralism and multiculturalism.

He said Arabic language experts continue to provide the intellectual capital that has incentivized development and progress in all spheres of national development.

“In other words, the Arabic language is one of the ancient and earliest-known languages to mankind. It is unique and renowned for its rich diglossia, and employed on a daily basis as a medium of spiritual and theistic interactions between God and adherents of Islam, who number 1.8 billion,” he said.

In his remarks, the Ambassador of UAE to Nigeria, Dr Fahad Al Taffaq, said the Arabic Language remains a pillar of cultural diversity for humanity as the language is used daily by more than 400 million people across 25 countries, with over 10, including Nigeria, in Africa.

He said the Embassy has shown continuous commitment to promoting cultural and interfaith tolerance in Nigeria, through various initiatives such as the Essay Competition on tolerance it organized for secondary school students in Abuja, the UAE-Nigeria Cultural and Arts Exhibition it hosted in Lagos this year and the Interfaith Tolerance Dialogue it organized for religious and cultural leaders.

The World Arabic Language Day featured a paper presentation by the Director, Nigerian Centre for Arabic Research, Prof. Elkhidiru Abdul Baaq Mohammed, and Dr Tahir Fayez Abdelaal of the Faculty of Art, University of Abuja.

Wild winds, huge sea and rain batter tourist spots in Australia washing away beaches.

Authorities said on Monday that a tree collapsed along the coastline of Byron Bay, New South Wales, Australia, December 14, 2020, in a still image from video obtained via social media.

Main Beach at Byron Bay, a popular tourist destination in northern New South Wales state and home to Hollywood A-listers such as Chris Hemsworth, has all but disappeared, Byron Mayor Simon Richardson told media on Monday.

“What we’ve got here is yet another event. An extreme weather event coming on the back of climate change that our community’s dealing with. It’s about the fourth or fifth major event in the last couple of years.”

The wet conditions contrast with the fierce bushfires that ravaged world heritage listed Fraser Island in Queensland state in recent weeks.

On Monday, fire evacuation points on Fraser Island were underwater due to high tides and huge waves.

The heavy band of rain and wild winds, generated by an intense low pressure system off the southern Queensland coast, battered the heavily-populated border regions between NSW and Queensland for the third day bringing more than 700 millimetres (27.6 inches) of rain in some places over 48 hours.

Australia’s Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) warned coastal erosion, hazardous rain and huge waves off the coast would continue through Monday and urged motorists to stay off the roads.

Australia is expecting a wetter than usual summer this year due to a La Nina weather phenomenon, typically associated with greater rainfall and more tropical cyclones, though a major heat wave had sweltered the east just weeks ago.

“Major coastal erosion is ongoing along numerous beaches in northeast (NSW) and southeast Queensland as spring tides combined with large waves and gale force easterly winds eat away sand from beaches,” BoM meteorologist Dean Narramore said.

 

 

Nigerian Troops inflict heavy casualties on Boko Haram

The troops of 28 Task Force Brigade of Sector 1 Operation LAFIYA DOLE have inflicted heavy casualties on Boko Haram Terrorists (BHTs) that attempted to attack Askira Uba in Borno State on the 12th of December 2020.

A statement from the Deputy Director Army Public Relations 7 Division Maiduguri, Colonel Ado Isa said the terrorists were suspected to have come from Sambisa Forest, mounted on over 15 gun trucks and approached the town from different directions simultaneously.

“Troops responded and engaged the criminals with superior firepower and the terrorists suffered huge losses both in men, materials and equipment.” Colonel Ado Isa said.

Colonel Isa further said the troops captured 4 gun trucks from the criminals while some additional gun trucks were also destroyed by the Air Task Force that responded swiftly. Scores of the terrorists were killed and over 20 terrorists dead bodies were counted.

Additionally, 3 boxer motorcycles, 3 Anti Aircraft Guns, 2 PKT Machine Guns, 10 AK 47 Rifles and 13 Rocket Propelled Grenade (RPG) Bombs, as well as a large cache of ammunition and other weapons, were captured from the terrorists among others. One soldier paid the supreme sacrifice and two others were wounded during the encounter and are responding to treatment.

Colonel Ado Isa also reiterated the commitment of the troops of Operation LAFIYA DOLE under the guidance of the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai to continue in sustaining the aggressive, offensive posture to rid the entire North East of remnants of Boko Haram/ISWAP criminals, rapists and marauders.
