Southern Governors, Traditional Leaders Reaffirm Commitment to National Unity

0
The Southern Governors’ Forum and the Southern Nigeria Traditional Rulers Council have reaffirmed their commitment to national unity, enhanced regional cooperation, and the strengthening of an inclusive and secure federation.
They made this known on Wednesday at the Southern Governor’s Forum meeting held at the Ogun State governor, Dapo Abiodun’s residence in Iperu-Remo, Ogun State.

The meeting which focused on security, governance, development cooperation, and institutional partnerships, brought together governors from the South-West, South-East, and South-South alongside leading traditional rulers.

Security chiefs from the Nigerian Army, Police, DSS and NSCDC also attended the meeting and briefed the forum on security challenges, including manpower shortage, equipment needs and improved intelligence coordination.

The meeting was part of strategies to deliberate on matters of shared regional interest, as well as strengthen collaborations between political and traditional leadership.
In a communiqué issued after the joint meeting chaired by Governor Abiodun,  the Forum urged states to formally integrate traditional rulers into their security councils, citing their proximity to local communities and their capacity to provide early-warning intelligence.

It underscored the crucial roles of traditional institutions in national stability, especially in intelligence gathering and grassroots security.

States were further urged to strengthen traditional councils through operational and financial support to enhance their roles in governance and peacebuilding.

Creation of Zonal Secutity Fund

To strengthen regional response, the forum approved the creation of a Zonal Security Fund, to be financed by member states for joint operations and capacity building.

It also endorsed a monthly zonal security coordination meeting for state security advisers and adopted a unified intelligence-sharing framework using modern communication and surveillance technologies. States are to jointly invest in equipment that ensures seamless inter-state communication.

Reiterating its long-standing demand for State Police, the Southern Governor’s Forum noted that community-based and regional outfits have proven the need for decentralised policing.

The communique reads further: “The Forum pledged increased support for local security groups, hunter associations and community surveillance units through improved logistics and equipment.

“In addition, member states were encouraged to work with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) to develop a unified resident identification system and to collaborate with traditional rulers on regulating land allocation to prevent practices that could heighten security risks.

The Forum similarly pledged to intensify efforts to protect lives and property across the Southern states. It also resolved to clamp down on illegal mining, citing its ecological dangers through joint efforts with environmental agencies and traditional councils.

The SGF extended condolences to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over the recent killing of military personnel in Borno State and the spate of mass abductions in Kebbi, Kwara and Niger States.

“It also commended the successful rescue efforts that followed, describing  them as a security strategy that is becoming more coordinated, more intelligence-driven, and more responsive.

“This act of leadership reassures citizens that the safety of our children remains a top national priority and that Nigeria will not allow criminals, insurgents, or opportunistic elements to undermine the nation’s stability

“The President’s swift action reminds us that leadership is measured not only in policy decisions but also in empathy, urgency, and decisive intervention.

“The Forum lauded President Tinubu’s “bold and visionary” economic reforms, noting improvements in foreign exchange stability, a sustained seven-month decline in inflation, and easing food prices. It also applauded ongoing infrastructure projects, including the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Road and the Sokoto–Badagry Superhighway, as well as efforts to upgrade Police and NSCDC training facilities”.

The Forum also passed a vote of confidence on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, praising his leadership and commitment to national stability, welcoming the launch of the Renewed Hope Ward Initiative, which is expected to positively impact more than five million residents across Southern Nigeria.

The Meeting held in Iperu, Ogun state, had in attendance 13 governors including, Francis Nwifiru of Ebonyi, Charles Soludo of Anambra State, Alex Otti of Abia state, Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State, Biodun Oyebamiji of Ekiti State, Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State, Peter Mbah of Enugu state, while the governors of Edo State, Osun State, Oyo state, Cross River State, were represented by their Deputy.

Traditional rulers at the meeting include the Permanent Chairman of the Southern Nigeria Traditional Rulers Council, Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, the Co-Chairman and Secretary of the traditional rulers’ council ,the Dein of Agbor, Benjamin Ikenchukwu Keagborekuzi, and the Obi of Obinugwu, Eze Ilomuanya, and other traditional rulers from the southern region.

The forum pledged to continue speaking with one voice while collaborating with the Federal Government to promote peace and development.

Reps Summon Water Resources Minister Over Delays in  Hydropower Project

The House of Representatives Ad hoc Committee investigating Nigeria’s power sector reforms from 2007 to 2024 has summoned the Minister of Water Resources, Engr. Prof. Joseph Terlumun Utsev, and top officials of key water agencies over prolonged delays and inconsistencies in the 40MW Dadin-Kowa hydropower project.

The Committee Chairman, Ibrahim Almustapha Aliyu, issued the summons after the concessionaire, Mabon Generating Company, revealed operational gaps and bottlenecks during a presentation at the National Assembly.

Those ordered to appear on 4 December 2025 include the Managing Directors of the Upper Benue and Hadejia–Jama’are River Basin Development Authorities, the Nigeria Integrated Water Resources Management Commission, the Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission, and all signatories to the 2005 concession and subsequent addendum.

Aliyu said nearly 20 years into the 25-year BOT concession, the project has suffered delays, unclear agency responsibilities and approval challenges, despite the concessionaire initially declaring the facility fit for generation. He questioned whether both the company and supervising authorities exercised proper due diligence.

The committee also demanded the appraisal report that led to the project’s addendum, along with performance assessments, generation data and payment records.

Mabon Generating Company said it has delivered over 700 million kWh to the national grid since 2021 without receiving grants or federal loans. Its COO, Umar Shehu Hashidu, reaffirmed the company’s cooperation with the investigation and submitted all requested documents.

Meanwhile, the Presidency said the Presidential Metering Initiative (PMI) aims to close Nigeria’s seven-million-meter deficit and reduce the electricity sector’s high losses.

Special Adviser on Energy, Olu Verheijen, represented by PMI Director Obafemi Sotebo, said the initiative is expected to cut ATC&C losses from about 45–50% to between 12–15% by ending estimated billing and expanding smart metering nationwide.

Nigeria Condemns Unconstitutional Change of Government in Guinea-Bissau

The Federal Government of Nigeria has expressed deep concern over the recent military coup in the Republic of Guinea-Bissau, describing it as an unconstitutional change of government that threatens the democratic progress and stability of the West African region.

In a statement signed by Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nigeria strongly condemned the military coup, describing it as a clear violation of the ECOWAS Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance, which strictly prohibits any attempt to assume power through unconstitutional means.

The government reaffirmed its solidarity with the people of Guinea-Bissau and urged the immediate and unconditional restoration of constitutional order. It also called for the safety and security of all individuals detained during the coup and stressed the importance of respecting democratic institutions in the country.

Nigeria further appealed to the authorities in Guinea-Bissau to ensure the protection of all election observers currently on official assignment in the country. It urged all parties involved to exercise restraint, prioritise peaceful dialogue and respect the will of the people as expressed through their ballots and the official conclusion of the elections.

The statement warned that those behind the coup would be held accountable for actions that threaten to plunge the nation into chaos and undermine the gains of its democracy.

As a key member of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the African Union, Nigeria pledged to work closely with regional and international partners to ensure a swift return to constitutional governance. The government reaffirmed its commitment to the promotion of democracy, peace, and stability across Africa.

FG, Peek Vision Sign MoU for Digital Eye Screening

0

The Federal Government on Tuesday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with global eye-health technology firm Peek Vision to deploy digital tools for eye screening and strengthen Nigeria’s push toward Universal Health Coverage (UHC).

The agreement was disclosed in a statement signed by Alaba Balogun, Deputy Director and Head of Press and Public Relations, Ministry of Health and Social Welfare.

Signed at the Minister of State’s Conference Room in Abuja, the MoU formalised a nationwide partnership to integrate smartphone-based eye screening, strengthen primary healthcare capacity, and improve real-time data use across the eye-health system.

The Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr Iziaq Adekunle Salako, said the partnership marked a major milestone in efforts to reduce preventable blindness.

Salako said millions of Nigerians continued to suffer visual impairment from cataracts, uncorrected refractive errors, and glaucoma, adding that poor access to services in rural communities worsened the burden.

“We are embracing the digital revolution. Peek Vision has created simple, scalable tools that turn a smartphone into a medical device, enabling health workers, teachers, and community agents to conduct accurate screening, even in remote communities,” he said.

He said the MoU focused on three areas: digital screening supported by national data systems, training of health workers and teachers, and a sustainable care pathway to ensure those screened received appropriate treatment.

He said the agreement aligned with the Renewed Hope Agenda, the National Health Policy, and the National Strategic Eye Health Development Plan, adding that the Ministry would provide regulatory oversight and the required infrastructure.

According to the ministry, the initiative represents an investment in technology, dignity, and productivity for millions of Nigerians at risk of vision loss.

Representing the Permanent Secretary, Director of Public Health Dr Godwin Ntadom said the partnership supported the Ministry’s strategy to use technology to strengthen primary healthcare.

“This partnership goes beyond signing a document; it provides a blueprint to expand access to eye-care services for underserved communities,” Ntadom said.

Chief Executive of Peek Vision, Prof. Andrew Bastawrous told journalists that the technology enabled screening “at the last mile”, reaching people who do not visit health facilities due to cost, fear, or lack of awareness.

“With our tools, screening can take place in homes, schools, or workplaces. There are close to 25 million people whose vision can improve if we act,” Bastawrous said.

“A new programme is already screening 5,000 people and aims to reach 1.2 million schoolchildren over the next two years,” he said.

Delivering the vote of thanks, the National Coordinator of the National Eye, Ear and Sensory Functions Programme, Dr Oteri Okolo, described the MoU as a decisive step in preventing avoidable blindness.

Army Seizes Power in Guinea-Bissau

0

A group of army officers said they had seized power in coup-prone Guinea-Bissau, a day before the planned announcement of results from a hotly contested presidential election.

In a statement read on state television by spokesperson Diniz N’Tchama, the army officers said they had ousted President Umaro Sissoco Embalo, suspended the electoral process, shut borders, and would enforce a curfew.

Shortly after, Embalo told France 24 TV, “I have been deposed.”

The army officers said in their statement that they had formed “The High Military Command for the Restoration of Order” and would be in charge of the West African nation until further notice.

The officers did not specify if they had taken Embalo into custody.

Two security sources said that he was being held at the office of the army chief of staff.

In a video statement distributed by his campaign late Wednesday, Fernando Dias, Embalo’s top challenger in the election, said he was free and in a safe place after armed men tried to take him into custody.

Dias said former Prime Minister Domingos Simoes Pereira, whom Embalo defeated in the 2019 election, had been detained.

“We have been the target of a false coup attempt for the simple reason that I won the elections… This is a simulation,” he said.

The African Union and West African regional bloc ECOWAS, in a joint statement on Wednesday night expressing “deep concern” over the coup announcement, said officials in charge of the electoral process had also been arrested and called for their immediate release.

It was the latest outbreak of unrest in Guinea-Bissau, a small coastal nation situated between Senegal and Guinea that is a notorious hub for cocaine bound for Europe.

It was not immediately clear whether the army had the support of all of Guinea-Bissau’s fractious armed forces or whether they were in control of all of the country of around 2 million people.

The army statement said the officers’ decision to take power came in response to a destabilisation plan concocted by “certain national politicians” and “well-known national and foreign drug barons”, as well as an attempt to manipulate the election results.

GUNFIRE IN THE CAPITAL BEFORE ANNOUNCEMENT

Shortly before the officers’ announcement, gunfire rang out near the electoral commission headquarters, presidential palace, and interior ministry, witnesses said. It lasted for about an hour but appeared to have stopped by 1400 GMT, a Reuters journalist said.

“People are running everywhere,” said a driver in Bissau who asked not to be named, describing scenes of panic.

There was no word yet of any casualties.

The U.S. mission to Guinea-Bissau issued a security advisory on Wednesday saying there were military checkpoints throughout Bissau and that security forces had deployed tear gas.

Dinis N’Tchama, spokesperson for Guinea-Bissau’s High Military Command, delivers a speech in Bissau, Guinea-Bissau, on November 26, 2025, in this screengrab from video.

“A continuation of the sporadic gunfire that was reported earlier in the day in Bissau cannot be ruled out,” the advisory said.

The electoral commission had been due on Thursday to announce provisional results from Sunday’s election in which Embalo faced off against Dias.

Both sides had claimed victory in the first round of voting.

Embalo was seeking to become the first president in three decades to win a second consecutive term in Guinea-Bissau.

A spokesperson for Embalo, Antonio Yaya Seidy, told Reuters that unidentified gunmen attacked the election commission to prevent an announcement of the vote results.

He said the men were affiliated with Dias, without providing evidence.

Pereira, who lost to Embalo in a contested runoff in 2019 and has backed Dias in this election, said that Dias had nothing to do with the incident.

Dias was meeting election observers when “some people erupted in the room to announce that there were gunshots in the centre of the town.”

Former colonial power Portugal called for government institutions to resume normal operations and for vote counting and the proclamation of results to go ahead.

It said all those involved in the unrest should “refrain from any act of institutional or civic violence.”

LONG HISTORY OF COUPS

Guinea-Bissau had been shaken by at least nine coups and attempted coups between 1974, when it gained independence from Portugal, and 2020, when Embalo took office.

Embalo has said he has survived three coup attempts during his time in office.

His critics have accused him of manufacturing crises as an excuse for crackdowns.

Gunfire rang out for hours in the capital in December 2023 in what Embalo’s government said was an attempted putsch.

He dissolved parliament in response, and the country has been without a functioning legislature ever since.

The most recent reported coup attempt came in late October, when authorities announced that a group of senior officers had been arrested on suspicion of trying to topple the government.

The lead-up to Sunday’s vote was fraught, with the opposition arguing that Embalo has already overstayed his term.

Under Embaló, the cocaine trade appeared to be booming, with an August report by the Global Initiative Against Transnational Organised Crime describing it as potentially more profitable than ever before.

In September last year, the judicial police announced they had seized 2.63 metric tonnes of cocaine from a plane that landed in Bissau from Venezuela.
