The 2025 NYG ended with an elaborate closing ceremony at the Stephen Keshi stadium on Saturday.

The Chairman of Anambra State Sports Development Commission, Patrick-Estate Onyedum, expressed satisfaction with the performance of his team even though it fell short of last edition.

It would be recalled that Anambra finished eighth place on the overall medals table at the last edition, winning 26 medals which comprised nine gold, nine silver, and eight bronze.

Onyedum said NYG was a development programme which was largely for talent discovery and not medal accumulation.

According to him, Anambra is proud of her athletes because they are within the age range and can defend their victories.

Onyedum appreciated Gov. Chukwuma Soludo for developing sports at the grassroots level through the reintroduction of school sports.

Anambra went to the games with a contingent of 145 members which comprised 81 athletes and 45 officials without any team event.

The Borno State Governor in Northeast Nigeria, Babagana Umara Zulum, has paid a condolence visit to the Darajamal community in Bama Local Government Area, where 63 residents, including five soldiers, were killed by insurgents on Friday night.

The victims, mostly civilians who had only recently returned to the community after years of displacement, had been resettled in Darajamal for just about two months before the attack.

Governor Zulum, visibly shaken, met with community leaders and bereaved families, expressing deep grief over the tragedy.

“At this moment we have confirmed that 63 people lost their lives, both civilians and military, although the civilian casualties are more. Close to about 60 civilians and 5 soldiers lost their lives,” he said.

He described the incident as barbaric and heartbreaking, stressing that his visit was to commiserate with the people and strengthen their resilience. Zulum also called for urgent deployment of the newly trained Forest Guards to complement the military in protecting vulnerable communities.

“The current numerical strength of our security forces is insufficient to cover all areas. We need additional support to secure our people,” the Governor emphasised.

Meanwhile, the Senator representing Borno Central, Kaka Shehu Lawan, under whose constituency Darajamal falls, condemned the killings.

“This attack is a crime against humanity, and we will continue to give legislative support to Governor Zulum’s administration in the ongoing fight to restore lasting peace in the state,” he said.

The Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno has reaffirmed his commitment to harnessing the potential of the state’s diaspora community, describing them as invaluable partners in driving development, growth, and enhancing the state’s international visibility.

The Governor made this known in London during a meeting with World Boxing Organisation (WBO) Interim Heavyweight Champion, Moses Itauma, and the Mayor of Islington, United Kingdom, Utitofon Jackson.

The meeting highlighted the rising global profile of Akwa Ibom indigenes and reinforced Governor Eno’s resolve to leverage diaspora expertise for sustainable growth and international partnerships.

At just 20, Itauma has been celebrated as a prodigy, making history as the youngest Interim Heavyweight Champion in WBO history and the highest-ranked boxer of his age since the legendary Mike Tyson. Likewise, Jackson, also from Akwa Ibom, holds the distinction of being the first African-born Mayor of Islington, one of London’s most vibrant boroughs where he has emerged as a prominent voice in community development, diaspora engagement, and youth empowerment.

Governor Eno commended both Itauma and Jackson for their exceptional achievements, urging “them to remain connected to their homeland.”

“Our diaspora community remains a critical partner in driving Akwa Ibom’s growth, particularly in sports, youth development, and international collaboration,” he said.

He extended an invitation to the distinguished indigenes to contribute actively to building a greater Akwa Ibom State.

“We are proud of the global visibility you have brought to Akwa Ibom, and we encourage you to channel your expertise and influence towards supporting the state’s development agenda,” Governor Eno added.

The London engagement also aligned with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritises celebrating and harnessing the potential of Nigerians in the diaspora as catalysts for national development.

By spotlighting the achievements of distinguished Akwa Ibom indigenes abroad, Governor Eno’s outreach reflects a broader national vision of leveraging diaspora excellence for inclusive growth and sustainable progress.

Nigerian Government Begins Payments to Indigenous Contractors on Monday

0

The Nigerian Government will begin long-awaited payments to indigenous contractors on Monday, following a breakthrough brokered by the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Benjamin Okezie Kalu.

The agreement was reached after months of arrears triggered protests in Abuja by contractors demanding settlement of debts.

Acting as Chairman of the House Special Committee on Budget Implementation, Mr. Kalu convened a high-level meeting with over 80 contractors, Finance Minister Wale Edun, Accountant-General of the Federation Shamseldeen Ogunjimi, and other senior officials.

The four-hour dialogue resulted in a structured plan for the immediate disbursement of funds and a framework for systematically addressing backlogs.

Contractors welcomed the move, saying “it averted further disruption and underscored the value of constructive dialogue in resolving economic disputes.”

“First of all, I want to thank the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abass, PhD, GCON, the leadership of the House for finding me worthy to be the Chairman of Budget Implementation Committee. We met yesterday, cut down our holidays to be able to reconvene and look into this all-important matter,” Kalu said.

He confirmed that progress would be reviewed later this month.

“We had over four hours’ engagement and they left here smiling. We got the strategy in place, and we’re going to come back on the 21st of this month to review what we’ve done so far, how we’ve ticked the boxes, what needs to be done and the way forward.” he added.

Finance Minister Edun affirmed that a clear timetable for payments had been established.

“Under the leadership of Benjamin Kalu, we did hold a marathon meeting where all the issues were discussed and a timeline was put in place and a way forward was mapped out… After Friday’s holiday, the Central Bank will open again on Monday and payments will commence immediately,” Edun said.

Accountant-General Ogunjimi reinforced the commitment. “This process is ongoing. We’ve been paying contractors and we will continue to pay. From Monday, payments will start dropping.” he stated.

Leaders of the Association of Indigenous Contractors of Nigeria welcomed the resolution, commended Mr. Kalu’s intervention and pledged to suspend their protests in light of the government’s commitments.

Super Eagles Secure Crucial Victory Against Rwanda

The Super Eagles of Nigeria breathed new life into their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification campaign after a crucial 1-0 victory against Rwanda on Saturday, at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

Forward Victor Osimhen thought he had given Nigeria the lead in the 8th minute. He arrived at the end of a left-footed slash by Ademola Lookman to toe-poke the ball past goalkeeper Fiacre Ntwari. But his effort was ruled offside.

The Galatasaray striker was then taken off the game injured midway through the first period.

In the 13th minute, Ntwali showed why he is one of the most respected goalkeepers in East Africa when he dived at full stretch to divert a deceptive cross by Lookman.

Later in the half, the in-form goalkeeper denied good efforts by Simon Moses and Alex Iwobi.

Six minutes into the second half, the Super Eagles were rewarded for their efforts after opening the scoring. Arokodare, now with Wolverhampton Wanderers in England, slammed the ball against the sticks and into the net after a goalmouth scramble.

The former KRC Genk forward had brilliantly held the ball for Moses to dart past and send it into the box. His initial effort was blocked, but he followed up and reaped just reward in netting his second international goal.

Tolu Arokodare celebrates a goal.

Five minutes later, Cyriel Dessers failed to strike at once from a good Iwobi pass, while Arokodare and Ndidi saw their shots saved by Ntwali, before the Amavubi number one produced a masterclass to divert Simon Moses’ angled free-kick with 14 minutes left.

The match finished in favour of Nigeria as the Super Eagles secured a vital victory before Tuesday’s showdown against Bafana Bafana. The contest in South Africa’s judicial capital will be nothing short of a flaming war.

Nigeria are still in third place and six (6) points off the leaders South Africa. Benin Republic’s Cheetahs, in second place following their 1-0 win over Zimbabwe in Abidjan on Friday, have a final-day tango with the Super Eagles on 14th October.

Minister Condoles with Niger State After Boat Tragedy

Information Minister Mohammed Idris has expressed the government’s condolences to victims’ families and the people of Niger State after a Borgu boat mishap claimed 32 lives.

The information minister, in a statement, stressed that the government’s thoughts and prayers are with all those who have been affected by the tragedy.

It is with a heavy heart that the Federal Government received the distressing news of the boat mishap in the Borgu area of Niger State, which claimed the lives of about 32 people. This tragedy is particularly painful, coming barely four months after devastating floods wreaked havoc in Mokwa, also in Niger State. We pray for the repose of the souls of the deceased and wish the survivors a speedy recovery,” he said.

According to Idris: “The Federal Government, through the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), will provide the necessary support to the victims’ families and survivors, working closely with the Niger State Government to ensure prompt relief and assistance.”

While commending the Niger State Government, through the State Emergency Management Agency, for its swift rescue operation, which ensured that all passengers of the ill-fated boat were accounted for, the citizens are to always prioritise safety.

“I will use this opportunity to once again remind the people to always prioritise safety when travelling on our inland waterways. In particular, no one should embark on boat journeys without wearing appropriate protective jackets. Safety precautions can make the difference between life and death,” he urged.

The information minister further said that the government has directed the National Orientation Agency (NOA) to mount a massive nationwide sensitisation campaign to raise public awareness on safety measures when using inland waterways.

Extolling the virtues of Chikelu as he marks his 95th birthday, the president, in a personally written tribute, described Chikelu as a friend of many decades.

President Tinubu especially appreciates his numerous contributions to the nation’s progress.

Numerous blessings

It is a thing of joy and eternal thanksgiving to God to celebrate the gift of longevity, surrounded by family and loved ones and count numerous blessings of ages past.

Your 95-year journey on this side of eternity has been filled with profound testimonies, impact on humanity, and selfless service to our beloved country.

He noted that “as a permanent secretary, or ‘super permanent secretary’, as fondly called, you distinguished yourself in the ministries and several departments you served, including Mines and Power, Economic Development and National Planning, Employment and Labour, and Petroleum Resources.

You epitomised the true essence of public service in promoting peace, stability, and development. Many of the initiatives introduced during your stewardship continue to shape and inspire improved service delivery to this day.”

Invaluable lessons

The President highlighted that the public presentation of Chikelu’s biography is a gift to the public and to political office holders, offering invaluable lessons on integrity, accountability and patriotism.

It is fitting that your 95th birthday coincides with the public presentation of your biography, ‘Owelle: The GPO Chikelu Story,’ written by historian and archivist Nze Ed Keazor.

I firmly believe that this work, launched today, September 6, in London, is a gift to the public and to political office holders, offering invaluable lessons on integrity, accountability, and patriotism.

“Today, our nation faces enormous challenges.”

President Tinubu concluded by praying earnestly that Owelle Gilbert Chikelu’s story will continue to serve as a beacon for all who aspire to serve with honour, responsibility, and accountability.

Happy 95th birthday to the Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON), Owelle of Ichida, Owelle of Anaocha, and Knight of St. Paul, Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion).

The president said he celebrated him with great admiration, trusting that his story would continue to inspire generations.
