It was a memorable Bundesliga weekend for Nigerian striker Taiwo Awoniyi as he scored for Union Berlin in a 2-0 win over City rivals Hertha Berlin.

The 24-year old opened scores 8 minutes into the 5th Bundesliga derby of the season.

He simply latched unto a lose ball to slot past keeper Alexander Schwolow for his eighth Bundesliga goal of the season.

A deflected shot by Christopher Trimmel into the far corner of Schwolow’s goal doubled Union’s advantage in the 30th minute.

Despite repeated efforts by Hertha to get back into the game, Union held on to claim a famous away win and bragging rights from the Stadion an der alten Försterei.

This was Awoniyi’s second Berlin derby goal since he made a permanent move to Die Eisernen after a loan spell last season.

Record

Awoniyi has now become the club’s record goalscorer in the Bundesliga, overtaking Max Kruse onto 13.

Of his 13 goals in 33 league games for Union, eight have come in only 12 appearances this season, putting him behind only Robert Lewandowski and Erling Haaland in the standings.

His total across all competitions in 2021/22 is 13 from 20, including four in six in Europe.
