Buratai, appointed by the late President in 2015 to lead the Nigerian Army’s fight against insecurity, made the remarks on Tuesday in an interview with the Voice of Nigeria Defence and Security Correspondent, speaking from Katsina State.

He said he was grateful that President Buhari entrusted him with critical responsibilities, noting that he was able to decipher the President’s directives and apply them to the letter.
He described the late Nigerian Leader as a Commander-in-Chief who was always forthright and decisive, especially in his resolve to degrade and subdue the Boko Haram terrorist group.

“He even envisaged, based on intelligence reports, that the Northwest, after the Northeast, would become another epicentre of destabilisation and insecurity, and he never waited a day to give directions on how the Northwest should be tackled. He also addressed it very well — the way he should,” Buratai said.
The former Army Chief further eulogised Buhari as a great and strategic leader who demonstrated that Nigeria could be successfully managed despite prevailing difficulties.
“We thank God for his life, and he has left a legacy that we will ever continue to cherish — as a nation and, of course, as individuals, especially the military, whom he served in different capacities, and also nationally. And I’m glad the Federal Government has declared the period of observing seven days mourning,” stated General Buratai.
