The Chairman, Senate Committee on Capital Market, Senator Osita Izunaso has applauded the proposed N58.18 trillion 2026 Budget presented by President Bola Tinubu to the National Assembly.
Presenting the proposal, tagged “Budget of Consolidation, Renewed Resilience and Shared Prosperity,” President Tinubu said the budget is aimed at consolidating recent macroeconomic gains, restoring investor confidence, and translating economic recovery into jobs and improved living standards for Nigerians.
In an exclusive interview with Voice of Nigeria after the presentation, Senator Isunazo said he was happy with the proposed budget that he described as a budget of the future.
Senator Izunaso said the 2026 Budget is a budget that has consolidated what the government did in 2024 and 2025, therefore President Tinubu must be commended.
“Well, I’m happy with the budget of Consolidation, Renewed Resilience and Shared Prosperity. To me is a budget that has consolidated what we did in 2024 and 2025. It is a budget of the future, in the sense that the overall implementation of 2025 was not encouraging, that is why Mr. President have said that remainder of the capital for 2024 and 2025 must be implemented on or before the 31st of March 2026, which is about the same time the 2026 budget will become operational.
“So what that one means is that we are going to have only one budget for the year 2026, we are not going to have parallel budget like Supplementary running, Repeal and Re-enactment of Budget, no, now we are going to have only one budget, this is something that is commendable” Senator Izunaso said.
The Imo West Senator also commended President Tinubu for giving himself a time line, and accepting responsibility by saying before the end of March 2026 that the remainder of 2024 and 2025 capital shall be implemented.
“Mr. President himself has given himself time line, he has accepted responsibility by saying that before the end of March 2026 that the remainder of 2024, 2025 capital shall be implemented. This is the first time a President is given himself a time line while presenting a budget, therefore he must be commended.
“This is the first time he has publicly given a matching orders to the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of Economy, Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, the Director General of Budget Office and the Accountant General of the Federation, that they must work the talk. Mr. President is interested in delivery the budget not presenting the budget,” he said.
Senator Izunaso who also described the 2026 Budget as the best budget the President has ever presented said it is a realistic one that is implementable and not a budget that is over ambitious.
“This is a realistic budget, it’s a budget that is implementable. I have looked at the variable of the budget, much as the budget breakdown is yet to come, but you can see that it is implementable. It is not budget that is over ambitious. This is the best budget that Mr. President has ever presented to the National Assembly,” Senator Izunazo said.
