The People’s Republic of China has restated its unwavering commitment to global peace, unity, and multilateral cooperation, pledging continued adherence to the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter.

Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai, made this known in Abuja at the screening of the film “Dead to Rights”, organised to mark the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War.

Ambassador Dunhai said; “the commemoration was not only to honour history and pay tribute to fallen heroes, but also to reaffirm a collective commitment to peace and a brighter shared future.”

He emphasised that both China and Nigeria, as major emerging economies and leading voices of the Global South, remain vital forces in safeguarding the legacy of World War II and championing international cooperation.

“Together, let us steer the global order toward fairness, justice, and equality for all. At this critical juncture, it falls upon us to reaffirm our commitment to the UN system, the international order based on law, and the principles of the UN Charter. This is essential for promoting a correct view of WWII and elevating the China-Nigeria Comprehensive Strategic Partnership to greater heights,” he said.

Recalling the horrors of the war, Dunhai narrated how, in December 1937, Japanese forces captured Nanjing and unleashed a six-week massacre that claimed over 300,000 lives — an atrocity etched in history as the Nanjing Massacre.

He noted that China’s 14 years of resistance during World War II came at the cost of more than 35 million casualties and economic losses exceeding 600 billion U.S. dollars, yet made historic contributions to defeating fascism and restoring global peace.

According to him, the screening of “Dead to Rights” served as both a commemoration of shared sacrifices and a reminder of the values of courage, unity, and perseverance.

Ambassador Dunhai also praised Nigeria’s steadfast support for the One-China principle, describing it as a cornerstone of the growing China-Nigeria strategic partnership.

The film, inspired by historical events, left viewers reflecting on the resilience of the Chinese people, their spirit of forgiveness, and the decisive role of the Communist Party of China in leading the struggle from the September 18, 1931 incident.
