The Citizens United for Democracy, (CUfD), says the electoral umpire in Nigeria, the Independent National Electoral Commission, (INEC), broke the peace accord by not keeping to its promise of transmitting the February 25 electoral results electronically.
Engineer Isaac Balami, one of the conveners of CUfD said the INEC was supposed to upload elections results through the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) machines, but failed to do so.
“We’re here to tell Nigerians and the whole world that INEC broke the peace accord. It is obvious Nigerians came in their millions to vote for the candidate of their choice. It is a pity the leaders cannot see the writing on the wall, that this is the 21st century and this generation is the wrong generation to play with.”
Also Dr Tanko Yunusa who is the Labour Party Presidential Campaign Spokesman said “the Citizens United for Democracy is challenging the promise made by INEC for a clean and fair election.”
Dr Yunusa also said the e umpire was supposed to transmit results immediately after voting at each polling units, but failed to do so.
He questioned why election results were not transmitted the same day, alleging that it gave opportunity for the results to be tempered with.
He added “this particular election will be challenged through democratic means with our level of agitation at the same time in the court of law. This congregation is happening across 36 states of the federal republic of Nigeria, demanding that the election that took place on February 25 be presented to Nigerians.”
Similarly, the founder of BASA foundation, Mrs. Bolanle Sarumi said “what will it cost INEC to ensure that as people were voting at each polling units the results are being sent, even if it had to be on the screens for people to be watching on TV.”
Mrs. Sarumi said the Electoral Commission owes Nigerians transparency “after spending billions of tax payer’s money.”
Executive Director of the People’s care and Advocacy Initiative said failure of INEC to transmit election results electronically is unfortunate and encouraged alterations of results.
He urged INEC to do the needful, especially now that Nigerians are clamoring for a new Nigeria.
