Connected Development (CODE), a civic advocacy organisation, has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to promoting transparency, accountability and community-driven development, despite undergoing a leadership transition.

Renowned for its flagship Follow The Money initiative, CODE assured that the recent change at the helm of affairs will not derail its expanding impact across Africa. The organisation pledged to sustain its mission of amplifying citizens’ voices, tracking public projects, advancing inclusive governance and promoting sustainable development.

At an event in Abuja, Chief Executive Officer Hamzat Lawal announced that after 12 years of leadership, he would be stepping aside to take on a new assignment with the United Kingdom government. He, however, emphasised that CODE’s vision and goals remain unchanged.

“Our mission is stronger than ever. CODE will continue empowering citizens, championing transparency, and promoting good governance across the continent,” Lawal affirmed.

Tracking Over ₦4 Billion in Public Projects

According to its 2024 annual report, The Year of the Active Citizen, CODE successfully tracked more than ₦4 billion worth of public projects across Nigeria and other African countries, reinforcing its role in ensuring that public funds are utilised effectively.

Housing, Climate Justice and Gender Equality

In August 2025, CODE launched a nationwide affordable housing campaign aimed at securing decent shelter for all Nigerians by 2030. The group also continues to push for climate justice through the Ewah Eleri Climate Justice Fellowship, empowering young Nigerian experts to advise at global summits such as the UN’s COP meetings.

On gender equality, CODE has intensified advocacy for girls’ education, particularly in Nigeria’s North-East, with support from the Malala Fund. Its interventions address the lingering effects of COVID-19 on access to education and policy development for gender inclusion.

Expanding Global Partnerships

CODE is also broadening international collaborations, including the Green Waka project, which supports Africa’s transition towards a sustainable and inclusive green economy.

Safeguarding Democracy and Governance

During Nigeria’s 2023 general elections, CODE’s Uzabe platform provided real-time monitoring and insights, bolstering electoral transparency and accountability in line with its mandate to strengthen democracy. Despite changes in leadership, CODE has assured stakeholders that its work will continue with renewed focus and vigour.

“Leadership transition is a sign of growth, not retreat. We are building continuity and expanding our impact,” the organisation stated.

With an impressive track record and strong global partnerships, CODE remains a pivotal force in Africa’s pursuit of transparency, social justice and sustainable development.
