Senegalese international Sadio Mane’s hopes of participating in the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup could be in doubt after sustaining an injury while playing for Bayern Munich in their 6-1 thrashing of Werder Bremen, in the German Bundesliga on Tuesday night.

The African Footballer of the Year came off after 20 minutes in the match. The injury comes hours after the Senegalese Coach, Aliou Cisse, announced Mane in his 26-man World Cup squad. Mane’s hope of participating for Senegal at the World Cup, which kicks off in Qatar in 13 days’ time, remains slim.

In a statement, Bayern Munich said he will miss Saturday’s game against Schalke. The German club also said further examinations will follow in the coming days.

Bayern Munich boss Julian Nagelsmann shared a few words about Mane’s situation after the match.

“It’s an unpleasant spot, it radiates a bit into the muscles,” Nagelsmann said of the injury post-match.

“I think he has to go to the X-ray to see if there is something there because it is splintering easily. But I hope that nothing is wrong. I can’t say anything for sure yet.”

Bayern Munich have said that Senegal forward Sadio Mane isn’t out of the World Cup yet, despite earlier reports saying that he would miss it.

The Two-time African Footballer of the Year, Mane, is a key player for African champions Senegal, who face the Netherlands in their opening Group A game on November 21st, before taking on hosts Qatar, then Ecuador.
