Council Chairman Urges Contractors to complete Water Project in Sokoto State
By: Ismail Umar, Sokoto
The Chairman of Binji local government area of Sokoto state, Alhaji Wadata Maikulki, has appealed to contractors handling the 1.5 million litres semi-urban water supply project to complete the project for people’s benefit.
Mr Maikulki appealed when a team of Journalists led by the Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Sokoto State Council, Mr Dalhatu Safiyal-Magori, on projects monitoring tour visited the area.
He said the water project was part of a local government uniform project initiated by the Sokoto state government in all 23 local government areas of the state. According to him, many local government areas were enjoying the benefits of the project except Binji, noting that noncompletion has robbed the people of the area of the benefits of accessing clean potable water as obtained in other places.
He lamented that the project is still in a concrete laying state for tanks while water Riggs were drilled for about two years now. The council chairman urged the state government to intervene, stressing that several efforts on contacting relevant government officials were done on the issue.
He said the area has benefited from numerous projects by the state government that included the construction of a mega premier hospital which is ongoing, and the renovation of district head’s palaces in Binji and Bunkari towns.
Others projects inspected included the construction of upstairs classrooms at Government Day Secondary School Maikulki, and Sabon Gari Primary School among many others in the schools. He further led Journalists to the renovated Jumu’at mosques at Gwahitto, Dalijam, Bunkari, Maikulki and Binji along with upgraded Primary Healthcare Centers at Maikulki, Gidan Mai-Debbe and Bulkari towns.
Another project he led the team to comprise the construction of a women’s development center, a Divisional Police Station which is also ongoing, and solar-powered boreholes at Soro, Gidan Bawa, and Runji towns. He added that the local government council also drilled boreholes to improve water supply in 15 communities, constructed culverts, electrification projects, and Islamiyya community schools among others.
He further said people of the area have equally benefited from economic empowerment supports comprising N20,000 small-scale businesses grants given to 100 persons among others. Maikulki called on benefiting communities to safeguard their projects noting that the infrastructures were meant to uplift people’s lives especially those living in rural areas.
The Council Chairman added that Binji is among the LGAs faced with security challenges as Qarani, and Gidan Qirya communities are not easily accessible due to insecurity. He said the council spends much in trying to support security agencies and vigilante groups in efforts to address the challenges.
”Security challenges, more access roads are among our major challenges faced by our people in Binji LGA,” he said.
