Former South African President Jacob Zuma has been granted compassionate leave from prison to attend his brother’s funeral on Thursday.

Michael Zuma died last week following a long illness.

South Africa’s Ministry of Justice and Correctional Services said, “a sentenced offender who is granted permission to leave a correctional centre, remains a sentenced offender even while temporarily outside. The permission granted to Mr Zuma is for July 22.”

Zuma will not have to wear the offender uniform while outside the correctional facility,.

Zuma is serving a 15-month sentence after defying the Constitutional Court’s order which compelled him to appear and give evidence at the state capture commission in February.
