COVID-19: Nigeria to vaccinate 112million citizens by 2022

The Nigerian Government says about 112 million of her citizens will be vaccinated in 2022 in order to achieve herd immunity.

Chairman, Presidential Steering Committee and Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha announced this at the closing of a two-day Summit to end the COVID-19 pandemic in Abuja, Nigeria.

The Chairman stated that there’s a need for State Government’s to ramp up the establishment of health facilities and ensure that hesitancy is vaccination reduced to the barest minimum.

“States should drive the advocacy for compliance. The statistics of Nigerians vaccinated in the country and those that needed to be vaccinated to achieve here immunity is very wide. Only about 3 million have been vaccinated and we need about 112 million to be vaccinated to achieve here immunity,” he explained.

Mustapha said, the exercise at the Summit was a continuation of the robust engagement the PSC has been doing to balance lives and livelihoods.

” We relied on science and data as well as the experiences of other jurisdictions to sharpen our thoughts”

“The pandemic has disrupted not only the health system, but also the socioeconomic engagements of the society. The Endsars protest was a result of the frustrations caused by restrictions,” he lamented.

According to him, President Muhammadu Buhari is happy with the collaboration between the States and Federal Governments in fighting the pandemic.

The PSC Chairman added that the theme for the summit : Pushing through the last mile to end the pandemic and Build Back Better, was properly exposed and underpinned.
