The governor of Cross River State, southern Nigeria, Bassey Otu has sworn-in the newly elected eighteen council Chairmen.
Performing the inauguration at his temporary office in Calabar, the state capital, Governor Otu charged the chairmen to imbibe accountability and key into the People First agenda of his administration.
Reminding the elected chairmen of the task ahead, Governor Otu said, “you must remember that your victory is a call to action to serve the people of Cross River State and deliver on your promises with integrity.”
According to Governor, “our (his administration) goal as a state is clear: to build our Gross Domestic Product (GDP), attract investment and enhance the quality of life for our people. This is not a ceremonial office; it is serious business.”
The Governor urged the new local government areas leadership to prioritise community development due to their direct impact on the grassroots.
He further charged them to focus on developing infrastructure and enhance public services at the grassroots, reminding the chairmen of their constitutional responsibilities, which is pivotal for good governance at the grassroots.
The governor used the opportunity to once again commend the people of Cross River State for sustaining the peace during the election on Saturday and appreciated security operatives for the collaborating to keep the peace.
Some of the newly elected chairmen promised to align with the Renewed Hope agenda of Nigerian President Bola Tinubu and that of Governor Otu as well as tackle infrastructure in the communities.
Recall that the Cross River State Independent Electoral Commission held local government area election on Saturday November 2nd, 2024.
Ten political parties fielded candidates for the chairmanship and councillorship positions across the 18 local government areas and 196 ward.
Candidates of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) emerged winners of the 18 chairmanship seats and 196 councillorship positions in Cross River State.
