Deputy Speaker Kalu Mourns Former Super Eagles Goalkeeper

The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr Benjamin Okezie Kalu, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of legendary Nigerian footballer and former Super Eagles goalkeeper, Peter Rufai.

In a statement issued on Friday, 4 July 2025, Kalu described Rufai’s contributions to Nigerian football as “immeasurable.”

The late goalkeeper, aged 61, reportedly died on Thursday, 3 July 2025.

Rufai had a storied career spanning over two decades, playing professionally in top leagues across Belgium, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Spain. He was also a key figure in Nigeria’s national team, representing the country in two FIFA World Cups and several Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournaments, where he left an enduring legacy.

Condoling Rufai’s family, friends, and the Nigerian football community, the Deputy Speaker paid tribute to the former goalkeeper’s outstanding career and prayed for the peaceful repose of his soul.

“It is with great sadness that I mourn the passing of former Super Eagles goalkeeper, Peter Rufai — a legendary figure in Nigerian football. His contributions to the growth of football and, generally, sports in Nigeria were remarkable. May his legacy continue to inspire future generations of Nigerian footballers. May God rest his soul,” Kalu said.
