ECN Introduces Policies to Lower Industrial Electricity Costs
The Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN) has introduced new policies and regulations aimed at lowering electricity costs for industrial players.
I’m pleased to announce a major breakthrough at the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN). We’ve successfully hosted a Validation Workshop to assess Industrial Energy Efficiency (IEE) policies, regulations, and standards.

Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi, the Director-General of ECN, announced this during the unveiling of the ECN compendium of industrial energy efficiency policies and regulations in Abuja on Thursday.
The event, which served as a validation workshop, was organised to confirm recommendations from the analysis of Industrial Energy Efficiency (IEE) Policies, Regulations, and Standards in Nigeria.
The new policy, titled “Improving Nigeria’s Industrial Energy Performance and Resource Efficient Cleaner Production through Pragmatic Approaches and the Promotion of Innovation in Clean Technology Solutions,” is designed to help industrial players conserve energy, ultimately reducing electricity costs.
Abdullahi explained that the new framework emphasises the efficient use of electricity.
“We are unveiling the new regulations and also a policy for industrial players to be able to use electricity and conserve it safely.
“With that, we are sure that electricity costs will be reduced. There are two key things here to note; energy generation and energy efficiency.
“If you generate energy, no matter the volume of that energy, if you are having 20,000 megawatts, if you are not using that efficiently, then it will be wasted,” he stated.
The compendium serves as a comprehensive source of accessible information on existing energy and energy-efficiency policies in Nigeria, offering guidance for decision-makers in establishing frameworks for industrial energy management systems (EnMS).
Abdullahi noted that the compendium is a living document that will evolve with the introduction of future policies.
He emphasised the importance of collaboration, urging Ministries, Departments, Agencies (MDAs), NGOs, and the private sector to work together to ensure synergy and consistency in implementing the project.
“Appropriate policy and legislative framework is necessary for the promotion of national energy efficiency and conservation best practices in any sector of the nation’s economy,” he added.
Segun Ayayi-Kadiri, Director-General of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN), highlighted the importance of industrial energy performance and resource efficiency for sustainable economic growth and environmental protection.
Represented by Michael Olufemitan, MAN’s Liaison Officer, Ayayi-Kadiri pointed out that clean technologies and sustainable practices have the potential to boost productivity while reducing environmental impact.
He further stated, “By focusing on resource efficiency and innovation, we can unlock new opportunities for job creation, economic diversification, and environmental sustainability.”
