The Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, has appointed former Ghanaian President, Nana Akufo-Addo as Head of its Election Observation Mission to the forthcoming Presidential election in Benin Republic, scheduled for 12 April 2026.
The appointment, conveyed by the President of the ECOWAS Commission, Dr Omar Alieu Touray, is in line with the Community’s enduring commitment to the promotion of democracy, good governance, and regional stability.
The mission is expected to be deployed from 7 to 15 April 2026, pursuant to the provisions of the ECOWAS Supplementary Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance (2001), which provides the legal and normative framework for election observation within the region.

The ECOWAS has reaffirmed its confidence in the democratic process in the Benin Republic and reiterates its call to all stakeholders to uphold peace, tolerance, and the rule of law.
The appointment of former President Akufo-Addo reflects the Community’s continued reliance on experienced and respected leaders to accompany Member States in the conduct of peaceful, transparent, and credible elections.
