ECOWAS Court Reaffirms Commitment to Accountability, Ethics

The ECOWAS Community Court of Justice has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening collaboration, promoting institutional accountability, and upholding discipline and ethics as the cornerstone of its operations.

The President of the Court, Justice Ricardo Goncalves, stated this during the opening of the Court’s 2025 Judicial Retreat held in Niger State, Nigeria.

The retreat’s theme was “Efficiency and Effectiveness: Streamlining Processes for a Dynamic ECOWAS Court.”

Justice Goncalves commended the Court’s Judges for their dedication, integrity, and judicious deliberations, which have upheld the Court’s reputation as a beacon of justice.

He emphasised that the credibility and dignity of the Court are built daily through the conduct, diligence, and unity of the purpose of its judges.

The Court’s Chief Registrar, Dr. Yaouza Ouro-Sama noted that the retreat would focus on key areas for improvement, including;.

  • Strengthening case management systems
  •  Optimizing resource utilization
  •  Enhancing staff skills
  • Implementing performance measurement mechanisms
  •  Reducing case backlogs and delays.

Dr. Ouro-Sama highlighted the Court’s human rights mandate, which has earned international recognition for its courageous and principled stance in human rights adjudication.

The retreat provides a platform for reflection, dialogue, and professional growth, underscoring the Court’s commitment to efficiency and effectiveness in delivering justice to the people of West Africa.
