The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has launched a humanitarian assistance initiative in Senegal to support refugees, internally displaced persons, stateless persons and asylum seekers, reaffirming its commitment to human dignity, regional solidarity and inclusive development.

The ECOWAS Commissioner for Human Development and Social Affairs, Professor Fatou Sow Sarr, led other senior government officials, including the Senegal President’s Chief of Staff and Chairman of the National Committee for the Management of the Situation of Repatriated Refugees and Displaced Persons, alongside representatives of UNHCR, displaced communities from Casamance and Mauritanian refugees in the Senegal River Valley, as well as development partners.

The initiative, implemented by the Government of Senegal through the National Committee for the Management of the Situation of Repatriated Refugees and Displaced Persons, with the support of UNHCR, is a five-hundred-thousand-dollar initiative that will deliver life-saving assistance and support sustainable livelihoods, while easing pressure on host communities, promoting peaceful coexistence, and strengthening national capacities for inclusive and durable solutions.
