The ECOWAS Commission has released its 2024 Report on the Progress of the Postal Sector, underscoring the strategic importance of West Africa’s postal network as a pillar of regional infrastructure and economic integration.
The published report was launched in Banjul during the 6th WAPCO Council of Administration Meeting.
The report highlights measurable gains in digital readiness, with 2,809 permanent post offices, 972 of them electronically connected, and sustained growth in parcel and express services driven by expanding regional trade and e-commerce.
The ECOWAS Commission noted structural challenges such as limited post office density and uneven digital connectivity.
The report identifies strong opportunities for modernisation, financial inclusion, and cross-border trade facilitation.
The ECOWAS emphasises that accelerating digital transformation and regional integration of postal systems will be critical to ensuring the sector’s sustainability, competitiveness, and contribution to inclusive economic growth across the Community.
