Emergency Response: Humanitarian Ministry holds capacity building training

The Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development holds a 
two-day training for Community Emergency Response Teams  in the North.
The training which was held in Kaduna, North-west Nigeria saw 40 participants from MDAs involved in humanitarian emergency response and rescue operations across the 19 States of the North.
Welcoming the Stakeholders, the Minister Sadiya Umar Farouq stated that the Ministry had been proactively reviewing the existing legal frameworks, mapping the stakeholders and designing a framework for the coordination of disaster management.
The Ministry is coordinating all activities necessary to build, sustain and improve the capacity to prepare for, protect against, respond to and recover from threatening or actual natural or human-induced disasters. Furthermore, the Ministry is enhancing the safety and security of organisations providing humanitarian services across the country, She said
The Minister who was represented by the Deputy Director Disaster Management, Dr Abubakar Sulaiman explained that the mandate of the Ministry was to provide effective coordination of National and International humanitarian interventions, ensure strategic disaster mitigation and preparedness to response in partnership with Mzury Nigeria Limited,”
the Minister noted.
The facilitator of the capacity training Reverend Father Emeka Xris Obiezu described the training as very apt considering the various and complex humanitarian crises experienc
ed in different parts of the country.
Reverend Obiezu said that the sessions of the training were interactive and enabled experience sharing among the participants under the guide of the facilitators.
The result of the group work and the pre and post evaluation tests bore witness to an increased capacity of the participants, which is an indicative that the goals of the training were achieved,” he said
The training was also expected to build community resilience to disasters and subsequently improve humanitarian conditions in the communities.
It is hoped that at the end of the training, participants  will be able to assess the nature and scale of disaster emergencies, understand migration as a consequence of disaster, provide search and rescue assistance as well as basic care immediately after disaster emergencies.
They will also be able to gather accurate information on the disaster emergency to mitigate migration and provide information on any local equipment, as well as mobilize such for disaster emergency usage.
Among other resolutions, recommendations were made for the training to be extended to more agencies and the grassroots.

The next capacity training takes place in Lagos on July 115,2021 for all the Southern States.
