A coalition of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) has called on the Kano State Police Command to ensure proper investigation into attack on the palace of Emir of Kano Muhammadu Sanusi.
It expressed worry police over silence and perceived inaction 48 hours after the attack on the palace.
The CSOs expressed concern over what they described as a “deafening silence” by security agencies following the violent invasion of the Kofar Kudu Palace on Sunday.
The incident reportedly led to the destruction of property, including two police operational vehicles, and left one palace guard with machete wounds.
The attack is alleged to have been carried out by supporters of the deposed Emir, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero.
In a joint statement signed by leaders of eight different civil society groups, the coalition described the incident as a deliberate attempt by unpatriotic elements to plunge the state into chaos.
The coalition said the worsening situation and lack of police response could compromise the relative peace Kano has enjoyed in recent times.
According to the CSOs, the attack occurred when a convoy believed to belong to the dethroned Emir Bayero, returning from a condolence visit to the family of late business magnate Alhaji Aminu Dantata, diverted from its usual route to pass directly in front of the Emir’s Palace at Kabara.
They claimed the deliberate detour led to violent clashes allegedly instigated by elements within the entourage.
The CSOs provided a detailed account of the damages and losses from the incident, includes three vandalized police vehicles (NPF 182D Mopol 9 and NPF 195D Mopol 52), Two damaged motorcycles belonging to security personnel, the palace’s main iron gate and a shattered police security post at the palace,
The theft of sensitive police assets, including a full police camouflage uniform, a pair of boots, and a bullet magazine among items lost.
The CSOs are demanding for the Immediate investigation into the attack, vandalism, and assault on security agents and civilians as well as Arrest and prosecution of all those responsible.
It also demanded for the Recovery of all stolen police assets and Reinforcement of security around Emir Sanusi II and his residence.
The CSO’s called for urgent action by the police to uphold peace and order in the state.
