Ex-Green Eagles defender Yisa Sofoluwe dies aged 53
Ex-Green Eagles defender Yisa Sofoluwe died on Tuesday after it was diagnosed that he had mild cerebral atrophy, a brain disease he battled until his demise.
Sofoluwe, 53, was admitted at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) since last Thursday after
Fondly known as the ‘Dean of Defence’ during his playing days, Sofoluwe won 40 caps and scored one goal for Nigeria and was a member of the Eagles squads which reached the final of the 1984, and 1988 AFCON tournaments.
At club level, he featured for Ibadan giants 3SC between 1982 and 1983, winning the domestic league title, before moving to Abiola Babes of Abeokuta. Sofoluwe spent four seasons at Abiola Babes and won the FA Cup twice in 1985 and 1987. He also played for Gateway Football Club of Abeokuta.

Sofoluwe played at the right-back position between 1983 and 1988, playing at the 1984 and 1988 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire and Morocco respectively. He retired from the Nigerian national team in 1988.
Yisa Sofoluwe was born on December 28, 1967.
