The Vice-Chancellor of Ekiti State University, Professor Joseph Ayodele, has emphasised the importance of psycho-social adjustment in helping students navigate the challenges of university education in Nigeria.
He made this known during a lecture titled “Coping with the Challenges of University Education in Nigeria: The Role of Psycho-Social Adjustment,” delivered in Lagos at the matriculation ceremony of Trinity University.
According to him, university education remains a vital tool for national development, as it prepares young people for productive participation in society.
“University education in Nigeria plays a critical role in national development by preparing young people for productive participation in the development of the society,” he said.

He, however, noted that students in contemporary Nigerian universities face a wide range of challenges, including academic pressure, economic hardship, and psychological stress, which can affect both their academic performance and overall well-being.
“The Nigerian university system operates within a context marked by economic instability, infrastructural deficit, industrial actions and social pressure, all of which place enormous strain on students,” Ayodele stated.
The Vice-Chancellor further explained that beyond academic demands, many students struggle with financial difficulties, uncertainty about future employment, peer pressure, and mental health concerns.
Highlighting the importance of psycho-social adjustment, Ayodele said it equips students with the capacity to manage stress, build healthy relationships, and adapt effectively to both academic and social environments.
“The present generation of students face challenges that extend beyond academic demands. Consequently, the ability of students to adjust and cope psychologically and socially has emerged as a critical determinant of their success,”

“Coping does not mean enduring hardship in silence; it means learning to adapt wisely. Students must develop emotional awareness, build supportive relationships, adopt effective study and time management strategies, seek help without shame, and maintain a sense of purpose.” he reiterated.
In his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor of Trinity University, Professor Clement Kolawole, called on parents and guardians to provide adequate support and supervision for their children to help them successfully navigate university life.
Professor Kolawole also encouraged students to remain focused and make steady progress despite prevailing challenges, noting that the institution continues to expand its academic offerings.
