Medical experts and key stakeholders have expressed growing concern over the increasing rate of infertility in Nigeria, particularly among men, calling for urgent government intervention and enhanced public awareness.

The alarm was sounded at the 7th edition of the Parah Fertility Conference held in Lagos, themed: “Fertility Puzzle: Unlocking Your Path to Parenthood.”

The event brought together fertility specialists, psychologists, and advocates to explore the challenges confronting couples struggling to conceive.

Dr. Lateef Akinola, Medical Director of Medison Women Fertility Centre and lead speaker at the conference, described the current rate of infertility in the country as alarming.

Speaking on “Understanding the Root Causes of Infertility in Male and Female”, he called for stronger collaboration between the government and private sector to improve access to fertility treatment.

“Gone are the days when infertility was seen as solely a woman’s issue. Today, more cases are being traced to male factors, and society must acknowledge this shift. Men must also be more supportive of their partners during such a challenging period,” he said.

Dr. Akinola urged couples to embrace available medical solutions rather than rely entirely on prayer and fasting, noting that IVF-conceived children are no different from those conceived naturally.

Managing Stress and Anxiety

Dr. Kemi Ailoje, CEO of Lifeline Fertility Clinic, addressed “Failed Cycles and Recurrent Pregnancy Loss: Causes and Solutions.”

She encouraged couples to manage stress and anxiety while remaining spiritually grounded throughout their fertility journey.

“There is nothing impossible for God to do,” she stated, while also providing practical guidance on medical interventions.

Demystifying Surrogacy

Mrs. Oluwakemi Amao, CEO of Chemistry Health Solution, gave an insightful presentation on surrogacy.

Her talk, “Understanding the Process, Legalities, Costs, and Emotional Aspects of Surrogacy,” sought to demystify the practice and promote it as a viable path to parenthood for couples facing complex infertility issues.

The Psychological Perspective

Dr. Leonard Okonkwo, a clinical psychologist, highlighted the importance of emotional resilience, urging couples to hold on to hope and faith throughout their fertility struggles.

Seven Years of Advocacy

Convener of the Parah Family Foundation, Princess Dayo Odukoya, reflected on the journey of the conference over the past seven years.

“This initiative was born out of a deep burden to support couples facing the silent struggle of infertility. Through tears, challenges, and triumphs, we’ve built a sacred community where stigma is broken, voices are heard, and healing takes root.”

Voices of Experience and Support

Special guest Betty Irabor, publisher of Genevieve Magazine, shared her personal experience with infertility, encouraging couples to support each other as a team throughout their journey.

Hope Rewarded

In a heartwarming conclusion, two couples were awarded free IVF treatment, underscoring the Foundation’s commitment to providing both emotional and practical support to families battling infertility.
