The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has decried the loss of forests to deforestation.

According to the FAO, the world’s forests are under threat, as more than 400 million hectares of forest have been depleted in the last 30 years.

“Forests stand as a vital defence against climate change and biodiversity loss and provide livelihoods for millions of people across the world.

“But forests are under threat. More than 400 million hectares of forest have been lost to deforestation in the last 30 years.

“This is an area larger than Algeria and Libya combined,” said the FAO.

FAO’s The State of the World’s Forests 2022  report identifies three key pathways to conserve forests while supporting environmental and economic recovery: halting deforestation, restoring degraded forests and sustainably using forest resources to build green value chains that support resilient economies.

“Around the world, restoration initiatives that engage local communities are improving our forests while creating sustainable economic growth.

“Tangible economic or environmental benefits are an incentive to protect, restore and responsibly use our forest resources, preserving the value of forests for generations to come,” it added.
