Some farmers in Dutse, Jigawa, have started planting their crops following the commencement of rains in the area.

A check by the Newsmen, on Thursday in Dutse, showed that most farmers had cultivated their farmlands after a recent heavy down pour recorded in the area.

In Jigawa like other parts of the northern region, planting typically begins in May or June with the onset of the rainy season.

Farmers planted crops like millet, groundnut, sorghum, beans, sesame seeds, rice, maize, among others.

Malam Yaya Baba, a farmer, said the arrival of the rain encouraged him to plant his crops, as the soil contained adequate moisture for the seeds to germinate.

A millet grower, Junaid Muhammad, said that he had earlier ploughed and applied manure to the land before planting crops.

He said that most farmers planted improved variety seeds to mitigate the impacts of severe dry spell as predicted by the Nigeria Metrological Agency (NiMet).

NiMet in its 2025 Seasonal Climate Predictions (SCP), predicted severe dry spell between July and August across 11 states in the country.

The agency advised farmers in the affected areas, to plant drought resistant crop varieties.

However, Mr Peter John said that he would delayed planting of crops and wait for the rain to fall again.
