The member representing Afikpo/Edda Federal Constituency of Ebonyi State in the House of Representatives,  Iduma Igariwey has extolled the efforts of Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru in ensuring that peace reigned in the state.

Igariwey stated this at the weekend while exchanging views with newsmen shortly after he attended the 70th anniversary celebration of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, held at Dr. Sam Egwu Press Center, Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State capital.

He noted that his decision to support the APC Government in the state, was informed by the peaceful atmosphere that has prevailed in the state since the governor assumed office.

“I am of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, but I support this government. I am a strong supporter of the APC government in Ebonyi State, because I like what they are doing in the state, the government is towing the right path.

“Time was when you would have invited me to this occasion, and I won’t be here. But I am here today because there is unity in the state. The atmosphere is very peaceful, the area is calm, and people are free to go about their businesses,” he said.

The three-time member of the National Assembly, commended journalists for promoting peace and development in the country, through objective and balanced reportage of the activities of government.

According to him, “NUJ as a body, is the conscience of Nigeria, and without journalists holding the government accountable, the government wouldn’t be what it is.”

The Ebonyi State Council of the NUJ, Ebonyi State Council on the occasion, honoured Igariwey with an outstanding performance award, because of his effective and quality representation at the National Assembly.

Igariwey who is the Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Appropriation, further urged journalists to continue to work with the people in government, to foster peace and unity and ensure justice for the people.

“You as journalists, as enlightened as you are, should always be bold enough to call to order, any public office holder who does anything outside the confines of the law and in this way, the interest of the people would be better protected,” he said.
