Financial Autonomy: Nasarawa State Assembly Joins Parliamentary Workers’ Nationwide Strike
Amina Mohammed, Lafia.
The Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN), Nasarawa State Chapter, has joined the nationwide strike of the association to demand financial autonomy of state legislature across the country.
Chairman of the union, Mr Suleiman Oshafu, stated this while briefing journalists in Lafia, the Nasarawa State capital.
Oshafu said that the strike was total, urging the state governors to do the needful by implementing financial autonomy for State Houses of Assembly.
“We are here today to embark on strike over financial autonomy for the State Houses of Assemblies.
“Financial autonomy will promote accountability, transparency and good governance in the country.
“In the last three years, President Muhammadu Buhari signed an executive order for the financial autonomy of the state assemblies.
“What we want from the government is that all state legislature must be financially autonomous.
“This strike is nationwide. It’s an indefinite strike.
“I call on all PASAN members to comply with the strike, stay at home and be law-abiding until further directive from the national leadership of the association,“ he added.
Voice of Nigeria reports that the members of the association carried placards bearing different inscriptions, such as “No going back on financial autonomy”, “Financial autonomy is constitutionally guaranteed”, “Give us our financial autonomy now”, “No autonomy, no legislator and no work”, “Autonomy: the only solution to vibrant legislation”, among others.
