First Lady Inaugurates Healthy Living Garden Competition In Secondary Schools

The wife of Anambra State governor, Mrs Nonye Soludo, has inaugurated the Healthy Living Garden Competition in over 250 secondary schools in the state.

Inaugurating the competition in Awka the state capital, Mrs Soludo said that the aim is to train school children to appreciate agriculture, hard work, dedication, and to promote green environment and organic food consumption.

She added that it was a major highlight of the inauguration of Healthy Living Ambassadors for 119 extra secondary schools.

She went further to suggest that each school could choose to sell the produce to parents or teachers, and use the funds for charitable works, that way, the children will learn the value of charity and selflessness.

The governor’s wife urged the teachers to show dedication to the tasks, and groom the students and pupils in a way that meets the teachings of the programme, promising that the rewards for those who show dedication to the works will be worth it.

Speaking at the occasion, Dr Afam Obidike, the Anambra State Commissioner for Health, said the schools garden competition would increase student’s knowledge about the nutritional value of foods.

In her remarks, Professor Nkechi Ikediugwu, Chairperson, Post Primary Schools Service Commission, said schools in the state would offer Health Living lecture every Wednesday after break to help students learn how to be healthy and grow into healthy adults.

The programme featured the distribution of Okro, carrot, pepper, tomatoes, watermelon, and cucumber seedlings to the school teachers to begin the process of their school gardens.

The Healthy Living Garden Competition is a termly challenge across primary and secondary schools in Anambra State, where Healthy Living Clubs are currently operating.
