Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, oversaw the distribution of food aid to more than 52,500 families across seven local government areas in Southern Borno.

The initiative aimed to alleviate the hardships caused by inflation and economic challenges. The distribution event occurred at the Biu township stadium on Sunday.

The benefiting local government areas encompassed Biu, Shani, Chibok, Askira-Uba, Kwaya Kusar, Bayo, and Hawul.

“This morning, we are in Biu to provide palliatives to 52,500 vulnerable families in southern Borno. This is in continuation of our efforts to provide food and non-food items to the less privileged in society,” stated Governor Zulum.

Although the region hadn’t consistently received food aid due to lower insurgency impact, the current surge in food prices prompted government intervention, as explained by the governor.

Each beneficiary received a 25kg bag of rice and maize. In Biu, 17,500 families received both rice and maize, while 5,000 families in Shani, Bayo, Kwaya Kusar, and Hawul benefited. Askira-Uba and Chibok each saw 7,500 families receive the aid.

In addition to food aid, Governor Zulum allocated over N100m to support 2,000 youth and women farmers in cultivating their farmlands. Each beneficiary received N50,000 to bolster their farming activities.

The ceremony saw attendance from various government officials, including Deputy Governor Umar Usman Kadafur, Borno APC Chairman Bello Ayuba, Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume, House of Representatives member Engr Bukar Talba, Deputy Speaker of Borno Assembly Abdullahi Musa Askira, and other officials.
