The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has deployed a medical team to Tiffin Manza Primary School in Mokwa to assist children and pregnant women affected by the recent flooding in the Unguwan Hausawa area of Mokwa Local Government Area.

According to UNICEF Water and Hygiene Specialist, Teresa Pamma, the deployment aims to ensure that affected residents have access to essential healthcare services and to prevent the outbreak of diseases following the flood.

Teresa explained that the team will also provide specialized care for pregnant women to ensure they receive proper medical attention and are protected from illnesses that could harm them or their unborn babies.

The UNICEF team, which arrived promptly after the incident to assess the severity of the flooding and respond to the needs of the children, also organized recreational activities for some of the affected children to help ease their emotional trauma and bring them comfort.

One of the beneficiaries, Malama Fatima Jibrin, expressed appreciation to UNICEF for the timely medical support, noting that it has helped address several health concerns affecting their children.

Another victim, 28-year-old Habiba Abdullahi, who lost four of her children to the flood, tearfully appreciated UNICEF, saying the only child she had left received urgent medical attention.

The Niger State Government also commended UNICEF for its swift intervention, noting that the support will help prevent disease outbreaks in the flood-affected and contaminated environment.

During a visit to the UNICEF medical stand, the Deputy Governor of Niger State, Comrade Yakubu Garba, praised the organization’s dedication, saying it reflects a strong commitment to saving the lives of children impacted by the disaster.

UNICEF, known globally for its work with children, has once again demonstrated its dedication by swiftly responding to the health crisis in Mokwa, where the majority of victims are women and children.
