The Forum of State lndependent Electoral Commissions of Nigeria (FOSIECON) has expressed its determination to support the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in deepening democratic process through the conduct of credible elections in the country.
The group, led by its National Chairman, Mamman Nda Eri stated this when they paid a courtesy visit to the INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu to introduce its newly inaugurated National Executive Committee members in Abuja.
The Chairman said that the visit was a significant step in fostering the enduring partnership between INEC and the State Independent Electoral Commissions (SIECS) across the Federation.
“We believe that a more coordinated and collaborative relationship between INEC and the State Independent Electoral Commissions SIECs is essential for the consolidation of democracy, particularly at the grassroots level, our commitment is grounded in the belief that credible local government elections are fundamental to democratic development, and that SIECS, with proper support and alignment, can deliver electoral processes that meet national and international standards,” he noted.
The National Chairman of FESIECON who is also the chairman of the Kogi State Independent Electoral Commission, however requested for support and collaboration from INEC Chairman in the areas, technical assistance to support the deployment of appropriate technology and systems that can improve the conduct of local government elections in the country.
He also requested for capacity building by the INEC to enhance the professionalism and operational efficiency of SIEC officials through joint training programs, workshops, and peer learning exchanges.
The chairman also canvassed for the need of INEC to share its knowledge and ideas so as to foster a platform for the exchange of best practices, research, and innovations in electoral management that can benefit both INEC and SIECS.
The Chairman emphasised that they were confident that with INEC’s guidance and partnership, the SIECS can play a stronger role in deepening democratic values and participation at the subnational level stating that the visit was more than a courtesy but a reaffirmation of their shared mandate and mutual interest in advancing credible electoral processes throughout Nigeria.
“We look forward to a productive engagement today and a renewed partnership going forward.
Thank you once again for receiving us. We remain open to your counsel and direction as we work together to strengthen democracy in Nigeria,” he said.
Responding, the INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu reminded them that the Commission shared responsibilities with them in the conduct of local government elections.
Professor Yakubu noted that INEC would continue to improve the quality of elections in the country and drew their attention to the relevant provisions of the electoral Act, 2022 pertaining to the conduct of local government elections in Nigeria.
The INEC Chairman assured that them of the Commission’s continued support in the conduct of credible and transparent elections at the basic and most important level, which is the Local Government system.
