The French government has pledged robust support to Nigeria in tackling rising terrorism and security challenges, reinforcing international collaboration for peace and stability.

President Emmanuel Macron of France disclosed on his X handle that he held discussions with Nigerian President Bola Tinubu regarding the worsening insecurity in the country. During the conversation, President Tinubu called for a stronger partnership with France, while President Macron stressed the need to involve other international partners to address the challenges effectively.

“I spoke with President Tinubu of Nigeria. I conveyed France’s solidarity on security challenges. We will strengthen our partnership; no one can remain a spectator,” President Macron said, adding that France would cooperate with Nigeria to provide crucial support to citizens affected by insecurity.

In July 2025, the Nigerian Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, and the French Ambassador to Nigeria, Marc Fonbaustier, reaffirmed in Abuja their commitment to deepening cooperation in trade, security, education, and culture, as both countries continue to explore mutual opportunities built on decades of strong diplomatic relations.

Nigeria and France have enjoyed diplomatic relations since October 1, 1960, collaborating closely in counter-terrorism, trade, and cultural exchange. Today, Nigeria remains France’s largest trading partner in sub-Saharan Africa, underscoring the importance of their enduring partnership.
