Governor Ortom loses senatorial election in Benue State

Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State in North Central Nigeria has lost the bid to represent Benue North West Senatorial District at the National Assembly.

Senator Patrick Aba Moro however emerged so far as the only Senator on the ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party after he defeated Daniel Onje of the All Progressives Congress, APC in Benue South Senatorial District.

Governor Ortom was defeated by his former Special Adviser on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Titus Zam of the All Progressives Congress, APC who scored a total of 143, 151 votes.

According to the result announced by the Returning Officer for the National Assembly elections in charge of Benue North West Senatorial District, Professor Rufus Shaato, Governor Ortom obtained 106,882 votes in the contest.

The Labour Party Senatorial candidate, Mark Gbilla came 3rd in the race with 51,950 votes.

In other elections, former House of Representatives Member, Dickson Tarkighir of the All Progressives Congress, APC defeated incumbent member, Benjamin Mzondu of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP with 49,511 votes against 43,803 to emerge winner of the Makurdi / Guma Federal Constituency.

Elsewhere in Gwer West Gwer East Federal Constituency, former Aide to former Vice President, Namadi Sambo, Asema Achado of the All Progressives Congress, APC triumphed over the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP Emmanuel Ukaa.

Reacting to his victory, Titus Zam attributed the mass failure of the Peoples Democratic Party to the poor quality service of Governor Samuel Ortom.

“The result of the election that has given me victory is a referendum of the people of my constituency on the poor quality of leadership by Governor Samuel Ortom.

My victory is a lesson to present and future political leaders that if you don’t serve your people diligently, you will lose out just as Ortom has lost.
