GSMA Appoints MTN CEO, Ralph Mupita, as Deputy Chair

Ralph Mupita, President and Chief Executive Officer of MTN Group, has been appointed as the Deputy Chair of the Global System for Mobile Communications Association (GSMA) Board of Directors. His tenure, which extends until the end of 2026, will see him play a critical role in shaping the global mobile industry’s strategic direction.

The GSMA represents mobile operators and technology firms worldwide, advocating for policies that drive digital transformation and connectivity. In his new role, Mupita will work closely with the GSMA Chair and Board to advance innovation and inclusivity in the mobile sector.

Reacting to the appointment, Mupita expressed his gratitude and commitment to advancing the mobile industry.

“This appointment is a great honour as it comes at a time of rapid developments in technology and increasing digital adoption across Africa.  

“Mobile technology plays a pivotal role in solving pressing challenges and unlocking the full potential of Africa and the Global South. Our goal is to ensure that no one is left behind in this journey toward a more connected world,” he said.

GSMA Director General Vivek Badrinath welcomed Mupita’s appointment, highlighting his extensive experience in leading transformative digital initiatives.

“His experience will be invaluable as we continue to navigate the dynamic landscape of our industry. I look forward to working closely with him and the Board,” Badrinath said.

Since becoming MTN Group CEO in 2020, Mupita has spearheaded key initiatives that have strengthened the company’s financial position and expanded its footprint. Under his leadership, MTN successfully listed subsidiaries in Ghana, Nigeria, Rwanda, and Uganda.

Before joining MTN, Mupita was CEO of Old Mutual Emerging Markets, overseeing financial services operations in 19 countries across Africa, Latin America, and Asia. He holds a BSc in Engineering (Hons) and an MBA from the University of Cape Town, along with executive training from Harvard Business School.

Mupita’s appointment comes at a crucial time for the mobile industry, as Africa continues to experience rapid digital adoption. His role at GSMA is expected to influence policies that promote digital inclusion, 5G adoption, and technological advancements that benefit emerging markets.
