The National Human Rights Commission in Nigeria (NHRC) has commended the media for its crucial role in advocating for human rights and giving a platform to victims of abuse.
The Executive Secretary of the commission, Dr Tony Ojukwu during a media event in Abuja, expressed gratitude for the media’s commitment to fair and balanced reporting on human rights matters.
Represented by the Commission’s Director of Legal Services and Enforcement, Rabi Anwar Ojukwu acknowledged that journalists have significantly elevated the Commission’s programs and activities to both national and global audiences.
“This year, we have witnessed extensive and impactful publicity around human rights issues, thanks to your unwavering commitment and professionalism. Your work has not only raised awareness but also increased security and accountability for victims of abuse,” Ojukwu said.
He acknowledged that thanks to journalists’ efforts, numerous victims of human rights violations have gained greater awareness of their rights, enabling them to seek justice. This progress, he noted, has improved the country’s human rights standing among nations.
The Commission emphasized its dedication to fostering cooperation with the media and committed to ongoing capacity-building initiatives to improve reporting on complex human rights matters, including migration, business ethics, and emerging issues.
“The Commission so much values your technique of storytelling and your ability to narrate human rights issues in such a manner that our audience could appreciate and follow developments in the Commission,” he added.
Ojukwu reiterated the NHRC’s commitment to transparency and collaboration, highlighting the media’s crucial role as partners in the pursuit of justice and fairness.
