Human Rights Commission unveils four-year plan of robust engagement

The National Human Rights Commission in Nigeria (NHRC), has unveiled its four-year plan to advance the course of human rights protection in the country.

Unveiling the plan in Abuja, Nigeria’s Capital, the Executive Secretary of the commission, Mr. Tony Ojukwu believes that the 2024 – 2027 will serve as a comprehensive roadmap to drive forward the protection, promotion and enforcement of rights across the country.

Ojukwu noted that the four-year strategic plan aims to guide the commission in carrying out its mandate and fulfill Nigeria’s commitment to International human rights principles, “including those enshrined in the Universal declaration of Human Rights and various regional and international conventions.”

The human rights boss explained that key objectives to be undertaken in the four-year plan is informed by the thematic areas of focus of the commission and the sustainable development goals.

Mr. Ojukwu added that the commission is also focusing to achieve its goal plan in line with the Federal Government’s National development plan 2021-2025, anchored on the policy thrusts and eight-point agenda of President Tinubu’s administration.

He said, the commission will achieve this by strengthening of collaborations and partnership with various stakeholders, “including government agencies, civil society organizations, institutions and the general public.”

“It will also carry out a broad range of actions, including human rights education and policy advocacy.”

The human rights boss further emphasized that, throughout the four-year period, the strategic plan will serve as a guiding framework for the National Human Rights Commission to effectively respond to ever-changing landscape of human rights issues in Nigeria.

“It emphasizes the need for proactive measures, evidence-based interventions and the promotion of the rule of law to ensure that all Nigerians can enjoy their fundamental human rights without discrimination.”

Also, the Director Planning and statistics of the commission Mr. Daniel Entonu who gave an overview of the 2019-2022 strategic plan of the commission and promised improved human rights protection to Nigerians in the new plan.
