Nigeria’s Inspector General of Police, IGP Olatunji Disu, has ordered an immediate restructuring of tactical units within states, to ensure operational efficiency and eliminate the unnecessary proliferation of teams.
Speaking during the monthly Officers’ Conference in Lafia, the Nasarawa state capital, the state Commissioner of Police, CP Shetima Jauro Mohammed, relayed critical directives aimed at professionalising the force and restoring public confidence.
He said in a decisive move to curb professional misconduct, the IGP through the CP announced a total ban on the involvement of police personnel in civil matters, particularly land disputes.

“There shall be no deployment of officers to guard plots of land. The Police Force is not an agent for private interests in land matters, adding that any officer found violating this directive would face strict disciplinary measures,” the IGP warned.
He further addressed several systemic issues within the command, including: Duplicate Investigations, condeming the practice of multiple formations investigating the same case, describing it as a source of confusion that erodes public trust.
“A comprehensive audit of all arms and ammunition within the Command must be ordered,” he stated.
The IGP however mandated that all constables undergo rigorous firearms training and certification before being permitted to bear arms.
Reaffirming a zero-tolerance policy for custodial deaths, IGP reminded officers that bail should be granted to deserving suspects and that human rights standards must be strictly upheld.
